South Park The Musical: Bigger Longer And Onstage

can you imagine the South Park movie, itself a tribute in many ways to musical theatre, as a stage musical? it would never win awards, probably never play on or off broadway, but as a community theatre/college midnight show staple, it might do fairly well. think of all the staging opportunities:

Mountain Town: choreography styled after "Belle," most of OKLAHOMA

Uncle F***a: spasmic vaudevillian, with dueling farts and tapdance, plus a chorus of singing, dancing Mounties and hockey players.

Blame Canada: "The Mob Song"

Vive La Resistance (Act 1 Finale): Les Miserables all the way... each member of the cast on a different area of the stage doing the Les Miz March...

i think there was a vocal score published to the film's music, but it's out of print. anyone have that book? or any ideas on the film as a stage show?
MzGalinda

Oh that would be SO awesome...Let me think of a fantasy cast for that...

i do SO love you, mzgalinda dear

I think it would definetely lose everything charming about it.

Though I would love to see someone perform "Up There" on stage! That song is my FAVORITE! Especially the last few notes! LOL!

But seriously, the thing that makes it so acceptable is that it's deliberately low budget and it is a cartoon...

I LOVE South Park, though! I hope they try another movie soon! There's so much going on in the world that you can make fun of right now!
Perogo Ness

I think it would be hilarious.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone actually kicked that idea around. They decided it would suck, not least because they'd have to use You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown-esque costumes for the kids.

They were right.

I really would love to see Anthony Rapp as Stan. I don't even know why. And if not Stan, Anthony could easily fit in as any one of the others.

I don't think a vocal score for the film was published, but a book of Vocal Selections is available.

And I love you.

It'd be fun to watch. But, I do suppose I agree that it would lose a lot without the animation. Unless, of course, they found some over-the-top way of costuming the show that wouldn't take away from the hilarity of the crappy animation effect the movie (and show for that matter) adds to it all.

But, I do like the idea that a staged version has more room for musicl theatre satire in the staging aspect.

Maybe they could do characters like the four children in an Avenue Q-esque manner. ANd then have characters like Kyle's mother and Big Gay Al played by real people.

If there was some way it could work... I'm all for it. It could be a real spectacle (especially songs like "I'm Super").

Rev. Jerry Falwell.
Monsieur D'Arque

Lol... I hate to revive a long-dead topic, but to follow up my stage adaptation of The Princess Bride: A Musical Homage, my minimalist revision of Wicked, my completed Jim Steinman jukebox show, and my stage adaptation of the Raul Julia film The Addams Family, I'm making South Park The Musical: Bigger, Longer and Onstage into a full musical script.
Dvarg

I think a concert version could work in some way, but an actual stage production sounds too weird to work.
Monsieur D'Arque

Oh, it will be too weird to work. That's why it will work. I've taken the idea that the film was a back-handed tribute to musicals of ages past and incorporated that concept the whole way through, with most scenes or numbers deliberately evoking or parodying some musical, as they did (to an extent) in the film.

For instance, to add to the show, I've drawn on an alternate draft of the film script, as well as the South Park christmas musical/episodes, Mr. Hankey 1 and 2, and their accompanying OCR.
