Sour Kangaroo?at the community theatre that i'm currently working at, and have atleast worked shows for many years, they have a twice a year show for the age group of 7-19 called Troupe. i just did my first season with them for Once Upon A Mattress Jr. Their next season show is Seussical Jr. Auditions are January 23rd.
Because this is such a tight group it's very easy to already cast most the characters right on the top of my head- buuut... i'm having a hard time figuring out who i would play. i was personally thinking the corky Gertrude would be a great role for me, as it was also suggested by the directors when i talked to them about it. But a few of the other Troupe members said i'd probably get Sour Kangaroo, because they say she's jazzy and belts. i'm not at all familure with the character. Do you think it's a very big role, and how much stage time?
Here's some roles i've played to give you an idea of what i've done and can do-
i've played all Fred, Jester, Minstrel, and Queen...most recently Lady Beatrice in Once Upon A Mattress (one jr)
Both The Witch and Little Red from Into The Woods
Portia from Cinderella
Bloody Mary from South Pacific
Lucy Brown from The Threepenny Opera
Mrs Lovette and Lucy/beggar woman from Sweeney Todd
Please let me know what you think!!! it would really help. Also your thoughts of stage time for Gertrude and Sour, maybe even other characters you might think of that could be filled with someone who's done my venue.

She's definitely a supporting role. She's an "evil" character (can't remember the proper word). I'm sure she would be very fun to play!
Oh, and she also has a daughter. Sometimes the daughter is actually played by an actress, but sometimes it's a puppet that SK carries around.

It's a fun role - the Sour Kangaroo always gets big applause! As you said, yes it's very jazzy and belty. And yeah, it'd be fun to do the puppet thing as well.

The Sour Kangaroo is the one who sings like Aretha Franklin, right? ("R-E-S-P-E-C-K!")

Yeah that's her.
Okay, i think i've become more familure with that role- now what would you say to someone like me playing Gertrude? Atleast just looking at my little simpledout resume there? heh
The thing that i'm wondering is that i could be great at any role but if i'm the only one who can sing it- i'd get Sour anyway...
Now i'm really worried about casting, especially when i learned that there is not just the birds but a threesome of monkeys... hmmm... As it is we just did Once Upon A Mattress and all our older men barely filled in for Dauntless Wizard Harry and Sir Studley- then our king was a great 4'10'' 12 year old- who would probably get Jojo...
i have NO clue how we're going to fill this cast. Well, are their any chacters cut in the Jr version???

I had no idea that there was a Jr. version of Suessical or Once Upon A Mattress.

I played the Sour Kangaroo in the regular Seussical at my HS. It was probably the funnest role I ever played, minus me looking like the statue of liberty in my costume...
It is very jazzy and very belty. I got to use a puppet and I had to change my voice to distinguish between puppet and me.
The Wickersham Monkeys are supposed to be all males but they cast a girl as one in our production and she hated it...
Gertrude and SK are VERY different. I would suggest if you are hearing SK a lot and its not what you want, try for Mayzie... that is if they have her in the jr. version.
