Sound the ship?

In the second act, after the impact, Captain Smith instructs Mr. Lightoller to "rouse the carpenter and sound the ship." I have searched dozens of gloassaries and term books to try and find out what this means and have been unsuccessful. If you know please tell me.

Found out on my own. In case you are wondering, it means to take a reading of how deep the water is. So yeah....

no it means 'to go inspect the ship and see what are the conditions of it and how much damage has been done'
