Sound of Music auditions--help!I need help picking a song for SoM auditions in my community theater. I've already picked my monologue (Jane's Peter Pan monologue from Christopher Durang's 'Dentity Crisis), but I'm lost as to what song to pick. I really want to sing I Speak Six Languages from Spelling Bee or A Part of That from L5Y, but I'm not sure if either of those would be a very good idea. Also, the information specifically suggested "Rodgers and Hammerstein or broadway" so either the director is looking for someone who can sing R&H well, but at the same time I don't want to sing what everyone else is singing. So could someone help me out here?
Also, I'm not sure who to say I'm auditioning for. I'm 5'2", female, redhead, and weigh 125, and I was able to pass as a schoolgirl in the production of "The Miracle Worker" I was just in. But considering auditions are open to all people in the community, I doubt that I would have a chance at one of the Von Trapp kids. Also, since its open to all in the community, I would be extremely unlikely to get a major role. So what's left? It's been a LONG time since I've seen SoM and I'm not familiar with all the characters.
Any advice? Please help!

The two songs you have in mind are definitely too modern. You need to sing something written between 1940 and 1965, preferrably a R&H. I would prefer one song that is R&H and another contrasting one from that era that can be another composer. There is plenty of lesser-sung stuff from that time period, check out the R&H show Me and Juliet for example. What do you have in your rep/what songs do you know that fit into that bracket?
I can see you as maybe playing Liesl if you are a good mover/dancer and have an igenue type face. I suggest you watch the film.

I wouldn't change anything about your monologue now, but just so you know, 'Dentity Crisis is one of THE most overdone monologues out there. It's probably not a problem on the community theatre circuit, but I'd think long and hard about using it for anything else.
And I echo JIJane. You need to show legit abilities. Sing some R&H (Hammerstein or Hart), Lerner & Loewe, Loesser, but definitely NOT anything modern.

I did know going into the audition that 'Dentity Crisis was very overdone, but surprisingly, the judges hadn't seen it before. Just my stroke of luck, I guess.
And I sang 'Impossible' from Cinderella. Kind of a simple, safe choice, since I was in that show a couple months ago.
But I must have done something right, because I got a callback! Wish me luck!

I totally agree.
As far as parts go, don't consider yourself out of the running just yet.
There's also some options that people don't think about...
We just did the SOM at my school,
and I was cast a Sister Margaretta.
I know that "How Do You Solve a Problem..." is crazy overdone,
but it was still a lot of fun.
The musical also has three or four songs that the nuns sing,
with gorgeous harmonies.
So, if you don't mind wearing a habit,
there are plenty of roles available outside of the Von Trapp family.
I hope your audition goes well!
