Sound of Music Audition!

Alright....I'm ecstatic! Today I found out that a nearby theatre (Dundalk Little Theatre) is putting on....yes....the Sound of Music, and that the auditions are in August.

I'm smiling.

Obviously, as much as I'd like to sing a song from the show, everybody else will be doing the same thing, so I require some assistance from the greatest theatre-goers I've ever known!

I'm going to be auditioning for Maria and Leisl - Leisl first, due to my age, but I'd really like to take a stab at Maria. The company is pretty much for all ages though, so even though I look older than I am, Leisl will probably be my best bet.

As for songs....I'd like to stay within R&H. I was thinking about You'll Never Walk Alone, but it doesn't fit the characters I'm hoping for. This is where you come in....are there any songs that would be good for both Leisl and Maria that you lovely people know of? I'm a mezzo-soprano. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Michelle.

"In My Own Little Corner"- Cinderella
"Wonderful Guy"- South Pacific
"It Might As Well Be Spring"- State Fair
"Mister Snow"- Carousel

I've sung all of those before and I am also a mezzo. Good luck!

it's not R&H but 'A Little Bit in Love' from Wonderful Town would be really cute for either character..........the only problem being that it's not very vocally challenging but theres def. a good amount of space for killer acting

You and AngelicDramaQueen58 should talk about this together. She's doing a SOM Audition too for those parts.

Getting to Know You might be a good song, though it probably would be better with someone with a lower range than yours.

"People Will Say We're in Love" from Oklahoma.

Gah! False alarm - it turns out that the audition will be choral, and have all of the auditioners simply singing songs from the show together. I dislike that audition style....how do they know that the people whom they cast can act? Ah well....I'll just go and practice now.

Thanks for all of your help!

I've never auditioned for anything, nor do I plan to. I'm just wondering, is that kind of audition common? The choral thing? I'm not brilliant, but that doesn't seem like a great way to cast people.

Oh... I can't remember the reasoning... but there is a reason why they do choral auditions. I'm not to sure, but I think the reason is that they want someone who is so talented that they will shine and standout in a group.

thats a really weird way of auditioning, i never knew that people would do it that way!

I think that's a dumb way of auditioning. I can understand it for only casting chorus but if you are casting the whole show... I think people need to be given the chance to do a solo.

I'm pretty sure that the casting of this will really be a group effort. The Director (who's doing the casting) hates solo auditions. Maybe they just bore her, I don't know, but apparently she wants to do it the choral way so that when the cast list does go up people will understand the reasoning behind it and will remember each other. Kind of a non-confrontational way, I suppose.

And yes, they also want people who stand out among others who are auditioning for the same roles. I prefer solo, because that's where you can really show your acting ability (which I think the choral way will discourage, as most will be so focused on the singing of the songs, especially in community theatre), but if you're really good you will shine.

Still, it's not as bad as it could be, because when they have a few people in line for the larger roles they'll get to do the songs (from the show) solo.

And yes, it's good for chorus casting.

...i dont think it's such a big deal. i think its a bit of a pain when trying to match the oice to the person in the group and all that, but i would have thought if your good at acting and singing, you should stand out over the others so its not such a big deal.
