All true, except Sweeney's Johanna was not shortened. It just doesn't have Johanna's overlapping part, which was not useful anyway. It still is the full song.

so what songs were not cut or shortened

I just remembered that 'Alms, Alms' was shortened in the movie, it's full on the cd, but in the film, the middle part was cut out.
And the 'two quid was in it' part was cut out of 'Not While I'm Around'.

Anthony's Johanna

So do I. I hate how they made Johanna's role so small in the movie.

The Beggar woman sang the City on Fire part in Sweeney's Johanna, but there were no songs with the ensamble

They may as well have cut all the songs the lasting damage they did to Sondheim's score. My ears physically bled.

You should get that checked out.

I was disappointed they left the ballads out, I was looking forward to those... I guess they didn't need so much narrative though?

That is such a depressingly short list.

The Contest cut Part Two, but almost no productions use that part anyway.

But even if we don't count that...it changed the lyrics for a verse or so...does that count as cutting?

Was anyone else bothered by the fact that they changed random lyrics in some places? An example would be in Poor Thing they changed one of my favorite moments of clever Sondheim rhyming: it usually says "...one of them a judge other one his Beadle, everyday they'd nudge and they'd wheedle, but she wouldn't budge from her needle" and they changed it to something like "everyday he gave her a flower, but did she come down from her tower" And that wasn't the only time they changed lines. I found this completely unnecessary, but maybe there was some actual point to it that i missed? If someone sees a reason for changing lines, do let me know so i can clear this up in my mind.

that line was changed to make it more of a situation with the Judge and lucy. the Beadle never had a thing for her. I liked Sondheim's change.
plus "Never budged from her needle" is a weird line. as if thats all lucy did was sew.

Okay, i guess that makes sense. I just thought the rhymes were really clever there, so i was sad when it was changed.

I took "never budged from her needle" to mean that once she lost her husband, she obsessively sewed to keep her mind from that loss? It seemed to work well for me.

Victorian women (If they had a comfortable life, like Lucy seemed to) didn't have too much to occupy themselves-one of the few things they did do was needle work and sewing.

I think it was to show The Beadle was somewhat of a victim, being manipulated by the Judge to do his dirty work.

But the real question is that did they lower the notes for the actor's to sing it?
