Song suggestions for a festival/competition...

I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for a festival/competition thing I'm in. It's for scholarship money etc. and I need a broadway song, and I'm a soprano. I wanted to do a lesser known song. The bad thing is, where I live Wicked is lesser known.

So last year I did A Part of That from L5Y, year before Popular from Wicked. And then I can't really remember.

Lesser known songs in my repertoire are...

A Christmas Lullaby
I Can Do Better Then That
My Friend The Dicitionary

so, if you guys have any suggestions, i would mucho appreciate it. Thanks guys!
The Very Angry Woman

"It Would Have Been Wonderful" from Annie Warbucks/Annie 2.

If you did "A Part of That" last year, don't do"I Can Do Better Than That" this year. Vary it a bit. Christmas Lullaby sounds good!

are u using your own accompanist? Beacuase that could open up alot of sondhiem possibilitys.

I had an audition workshop i went to for musical theatre and my accompanist is AMAZING andit was hard for him to read sondheim and h can real ANYTHING but since we reherse 2 times a week together he got to learn "on the steps of the palace" and we perofmed it quite well... i also sang home from B+the B and the audition workshop director liked my choice of songs.

yes, my voice teacher is my accompanist. and she can read pretty much anything. i've done Sondheim and JRB with her and she hasn't really had problems with it. Oh, and I'm 17. Grade 8 RCM for you Canadians!

i was thinking of maybe "anytime" by william finn

and i love "moma who bore me" from spring awakening but i don't know if it's appropriate.

i just need to be able to get my hands on sheet music. the competition is in April.

"Yours, Yours, Yours" or "He Plays the Violin" from 1776?
LittleGavroche

Oh gee whiz. I <3 1776. "Yours, Yours, Yours," could work but I find it is better as a duet. "He Plays the Violin" could also work.

Is "My Friend the Dictionary" a soprano song? I love that song.

I also though of mentioning "How Could I Ever Know," and "Come to My Garden," both from The Secret Garden. Maybe "The Beauty Is" from Light in the Piazza. Personally, I've never seen anybody sing it.

I like The Beauty Is... not so sure about 1776, i've never really liked the music from the show.

Are there any other mezzo/soprano songs.

what do you guys think of William Finn? 'Anytime' maybe? Or is there a better song?
Salome

1776 has one of the best scores of any show. He Plays the Violin would be great.

also try some Cole Porter like

Satin and Silk

Down in the Depth

or

Begin the beguine.

The reason you haven't seen "The Beauty Is" is because the accompaniment is MURDER!!!!! And usually, the people who try to sing it murder it too...Not saying that you would, but it's a VERY difficult song to sing well AND act...I've seen too many professionals struggle with that song...THAT'S why you don't hear it...It's also really meant for a soprano as I believe it goes up to a "G" at the end...

And "How Could I Ever Know" and "Come to My Garden" are both soprano songs...the first one listed is HORRIBLY overdone...Though "Hold On" from that show could work VERY well for you...It's a mezzo song sung by Martha...Take a listen! Smile

I wouldn't do any more JRB if you've done a lot of JRB before...show them you're versatile...

I would look at some of the classics, as Salome has suggested as well! Smile
