The Duchess of Mint

Song of Norway 1970 movie.

Dear Musicals.Net Posters,

There seems to be little online information about the 1970, movie version of "Song of Norway", which starred Florence Henderson. I'm curious to know if anyone knows if this movie was ever released on DVD in the U.S. There's a DVD listing on Amazon.com, but the page says that the DVD is no longer available. There is nothing on YouTube which relates to the movie. You can see Florence Henderson as Carol Brady, as an advertising lady, and as a rather discomforting S&M mistress (She's literally singing "When You're Good to Mama" while cracking a whip...scary, I am shurr!), but it's impossible to see her as Nina Grieg in "Song of Norway"! Rats!

Is "Song of Norway" truly "the worst of the worst," as far as movie musicals go? I'm so curious about how bad the movie is that I simply must see it as soon as possible!

If any of you are "SoN" fans, there's a movie program (with ticket) on eBay, and the pricing is pretty fair.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

It's out of print, but you can find it, if you look around. There are sites on the net that sell it and check your local library. The DVD was a bad transition from VHS. Put aside that the movie's bad. The quality of the DVD is also very bad.
Still, it's rare now and if you really want to buy it, price will be high.

It's an awful film adaptation of an enjoyable stage musical. Filled with bad Hollywood dialouge and change of scenes that make little sense.

The only reason to see the film is to watch a nice campy bit by Edward G. Robinson in a nonsinging role.

Worst of the worst? I don't think it's number one, but it's up there. Nice costumes is the best thing you can say about it, other than Robinson's performance.

Incredibly slow and hard to watch

I agree it's not the worst movie musical ever made, but it is really incredibly hard to sit through. A shame, because Song of Norway was the first stage show I ever saw, and I fell in love with musical theater. I still remember the ballet, with the narrator saying "He kissed her, and cursed her, and turned her heart to ice!" and chills ran through me. Unfortunately, the movie was just another dull Hollywood biopic.
