Song/Monologue Help - TLRH

Hi all,

I'm thinking of auditioning at for "The Little Red Hen" at a community theatre near me. It's a musical, which kinda scares me because I do not take voice lessons (yet - this summer I'm FINALLY getting them) and I haven't auditioned for a MUSICAL outside of my school ever. The only character I have a shot at would be Eglantine R. Hensworth, the little red hen "with a Lucille Ball persona".

For the monologue (which has to be a minute or less) I'm thinking of this one from Alice in Wonderland:

"Why, how impolite of him. I asked him a civil question, and he pretended not to hear me. That's not at all nice. I say, Mr. White Rabbit, where are you going? Hmmm. He won't answer me. And I do so want to know what he is late for. I wonder if I might follow him. Why not? There's no rule that I mayn't go where I please. I - I will follow him. Wait for me, Mr. White Rabbit. I'm coming, too! (Falling) How curious. I never realized that rabbit holes were so dark...and so long...and so empty. I believe I have been falling for five minutes, and I still can't see the bottom! Hmph! After such a fall as this, I shall think nothing of tumbling downstairs. How brave they'll all think me at home. Why, I wouldn't say anything about it even if I fell off the top of the house! I wonder how many miles I've fallen by this time. I must be getting somewhere near the center of the earth. I wonder if I shall fall right through the earth! How funny that would be. Oh, I think I see the bottom. Yes, I'm sure I see the bottom. I shall hit the bottom, hit it very hard, and oh, how it will hurt!"

Just reading it over I have it at about 1:20, but I could easily make it a little faster without sounding too fast, I think, although any recommendations of shorter, female, child-teen age range comedic monologues would be greatly appreciated!

As for the song, this is where I really need help. I'm thinking it should be upbeat and/or comedic. My range is I *think* a Mezzo, I can comfortably go from the G below middle C to the second F after middle C.

ANY help or advice whatsoever would be greatly appreciated! My audition is next weekend so the sooner the replies the better!

Thank you SO much!

Very Happy Kate

I would sing a light, uptempo Disney song.

Thank you! I was actually thinking something Disney might work...do you recommend any song in particular? All I can think of right now is Part Of Your World, which isn't really upbeat, but I've had a long day.

Check out the older Disney films pre 1980's, Part of your world wouldn't be my first choice either.

Thanks, I'll do that.

Here are some good, uptempo/comedic mezzo range solos:

Open a New Window (Mame)
Adelaide's Lament (Guys and Dolls)
Doin' What Comes Natur'lly (Annie Get Your Gun)
I Got the Sun in the Morning (Annie Get Your Gun)
I'm an Indian Too (Annie Get Your Gun)
You Can't Get a Man with a Gun (Annie Get Your Gun)
I Cain't Say No (Oklahoma)
I Know Things Now (Into the Woods)
Let Me Entertain You (Gypsy)

Hope that helps! Let me know of your choice!

Thanks! I actually decided on "Stepsister's Lament" but I'll keep those in mind for next time! Smile
