song copyright rules/lawsso, this is sort of a random question but i wanted to see how much truth is behind a statement that a friend made to me. i was told not so long ago that someone could take a song - even say from a musical - and as long as they change at least 20% of the song, they can claim it as their own. is this true - even with copywritten songs?? it just seems like songs could be ripped off left and right - especially with a good thesaurus.
thanks in advace.

False.
Who can even judge 20 percent of a song? What does that include? Lyrics? Melody? Harmony? Accompaniment? Chord Progression? Dynamics?

Every song is influenced by every other song. And every song influences every other song. It is hard to tell unless the rip off is very obvious.

Lyrics and music cannot be stolen very easily. But style and mood/meaning of songs is often ripped-off

You always hear that titles and ideas cannot be copyrighted.
But I know this dude in nashville who takes other people's songs and re-writes them and puts his name on them. That is unethical.
