Sondheim Shows In Your AreaI was wondering how often Sondheim shows are performed in your area. Where I live the only show that ever is performed is Into the Woods. It is a good show but I would much rather see more than just that. |

If you count all of Norway as "my area", ITW will be produced somewhere at the west coast next fall. Yay for Norway being cultural. |

Side by Side By Sondheim...my community theatre did it a few years ago...before my time though Gypsy...prolly the second most often done one...if we count it... A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum...I know this has been done at least twice in my area... West Side Story...I know one group that did it... That's all I'm aware of... |

There's rarely any Sondheim in our area, so I commute to the East Midlands where there's more going on. Just finished a (very short) run of Follies, but we've also done ALNM, Pacific Overtures and ITW. |

Here in Miami:
Into the Woods, Company, Assassins, and Forum have either been done or will be done within the next year. Those are just the ones I've either seen or know a friend or teacher who've been part of it. |

My friends' high school is doing Sweeney Todd. I might go and watch.
Also, I don't know if this thread is pertaining only to regional productions, but the tour is coming next year to LA next year too. |

My school did the first Sondheim show in the area for the last 10 years(ITW both times) and now strangely, another school very close to us is doing ITW barely two years later even though it is polite and better for ticket sales to wait five years and we extend that courtsey to them. |

We had Sweeney Todd last year, at Russian Academy of Theatre Art. By the students of the Academy.
The production was rather strange. The dialogues were translated into Russian, but the songs were in English. The singing was great, but it was hard to understand at times, because of the accent. And I didn't know anything about the show when I came to see this. I enjoyed it, though. And am now a fan of Stephen Sondheim and Sweeney Todd in particular. Differences from other productions: 1. The stage was odd. It was almost empty. And there were brick walls all around. And the orchestra could be seen right behind the stage. 2. There were very few male performers. The chorus was completely female. The birdseller was played by a girl. Tobias was played by a girl. Most of all I liked Mrs Lovett, Tobias and Pirelli. Anthony and Johanna were pretty good. Sweeney disappointed me. His singing was excellent, but he couldn't act. At all. The Judge too. Some photos of the production: http://www.musicals.ru/index.php?item=636 |
