Sondheim "mix" tape for a Sondheim virginI mentioned to a friend of mine about my love for Sondheim. Well, she reacted with a sickened look on her face. Then she said "He made 'Sunday in the Afternoon', right?". I, of course, corrected her and said "Sunday In the Park with George". She said "Yes, that's right." I said "Why?". She said "I absolutely hated it. My friend liked it and he told me to watch it. I thought it was terrible". So, I told her that maybe that wasn't the right show for a Sondheim virgin. I told her that I would make her a CD of what I feel would be the best songs for her to experience as a "beginner".
So, what would you include in it? Honestly, I am trying to keep this to a one CD minimum. No matter what I do, I keep coming up with songs that will need to be put onto 2 CD's. I just like too many of them. So, what would you pick as the absolute best for a newbie? Well, to at least try and turn someone into a newbie?
By the way, I will be including "Sunday" in there whether she likes it or not. I think she needs to hear at least one song from there that doesn't include Bernadette (she hated her) and it would now be out-of the-show. Meaning, I think that if she hears one of the songs without hearing any of the other music from the show, maybe she might be a little more open to hearing more from the show at another time. So, that is my only selection from that show.

When I eased my friend into Sondheim, I played "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" and Sweeney's "Johanna" over and over again.
Now he actually likes those songs lol

Thanks for the suggestions. I was definitely thinking about "You Could Drive a Person Crazy", "Ballad of Sweeney Todd" and "Johanna" (Sweeney's). I just might consider "Another Hundred People". She is incredibly picky, though. So I am trying to choose wisely.
Dvarg, there were 10 songs that you listed that I also considered. Now that I see someone else would suggest them, I think they would be a good idea.
Honestly, after what I will create for her, it is beyond me if she doesn't like him!

I got to hear Patti LuPone sing "Losing My Mind" as well as "The Ladies Who Lunch" in concert. Quite amazing.
If she doesn't like "Another Hundred People", try "Being Alive" or "Marry Me A Little" (either of which are fine).

Please Hello? Why do I not think that's right for a Sondheim Virgin??? idk.
EDIT: I take it back. Pacific Overtures is once again my favorite Sondheim Musical... xD
I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH THE WORST PIES IN LONDON.
um...
"A Weekend in the Country"- ALNM
"Buddy's Blues"-Follies
wait, I know why: Pacific Overtures still strikes me as odd... and I love Sondheim, but I just... something's weird about it. Even as an asian guy, i still am not too extremely fond of it.
"Bang!"-ALNM (from "Putting it Together" revue)
"Greens Greens"-ItW (hey, if she likes rap, maybe she'll like that kind of)
EDIT:
"being alive"
"getting married today" from Company
"your fault"
