Some technicalities1. There seems to be a little contradiction in how TSE defines Jellicles and Pollicles. In The Song of the Jellicles he just defines Jellicle cats as only smal, black and white cats. However, somewhere else, he says that "all cats are Jellicles and all dogs are Pollicles." This is where the musical takes its lead in defining the characters.
2. Most of the songs about individual cats tend to serve the function of their wanting to contend for the new life on the Heaviside Layer. However, I can see exceptions. Demeter and Bombalurina sing about Macavity only to speak out against his wickedness, while The Tugger sings about Mistoffelees only to assure the Jellicles that he can save them with his magic and especially with his Cunjoring Turn. In this light, I perceive the numbers for Jennyanydots, the Tugger, Gus and Skimbleshanks as the cats who contend for the Heaviside Layer, where Grizabella gets to go in the end.

I think the point of The Song of The Jellicles is that it describes all cats. It's not that Jellicle cats are "black-and-white," it's that they're black AND white--after all, if Jellicle Cats are black-and-white, where does that leave Victoria? As for "rather small," I believe that's supposed to be a comparison to the size of humans versus the size of cats.

What about Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer? And Bustopher Jones? And Old Deutoronomy? Aren't they also contending for a place in the Heavyside Layer?
