SOM- help picking a song for MariaI did a search here but didn't find much advice for a Maria song- anyone have any suggestions? I have time to learn a new song, as auditions aren't for another two months, and would like to audition for Maria, with hopes of being Elsa or a nun if I don't make Maria. I have a wide range, and would like to sing another R&H song, but am having trouble finding something upbeat, and not overdone.
Even though they're slow, I was thinking of "What's the use of Wonderin'?" or "If I loved You" from Carousel, but then the characters are not very similar.
I'd like to find something that is spunky and shows off a wide range, since I have it and so does Maria.
Help....?

"What Is A Man?" from Pal Joey. I know its not very "Maria"-ish lyrics wise, but style wise it reminds me a lot of Maria.

Try songs from Camelot or My Fair Lady as well...
You could also use "I Have Confidence" from the movie version of SOM...

I sang "Simple Joys of Maidenhood" from Camelot for a SOM audition and was cast as Maria.

Thanks!
I will look into "Maidenhood"
Jazzy, what do you think of "Show Me" from My Fair Lady?

That sounds like a great idea! It is a good song to show how feisty Maria can be!
That's DEFINITELY a part of her character! Good choice!

I would suggest "A Wonderful Guy" South Pacific or "Show Me".

Okey-dokey... So I looked into "Show Me" and I really like the song, have been listening to the Julie Andrew's soundtrack for a few days, and have the song half learned (all the melody, half of the words), but...
I just don't know if my voice sounds its best doing it.
So just a general question: If I am specifically auditioning for the part of Maria (I would take any part in the show of course, but that is the part I REALLY want), would it be better to do a song that fits Maria's personality (Show Me) or do a song that my voice sounds better on but doesn't at all scream "maria" (If I Loved You)?
(p.s. this is a very small theater, and hopefully we have enough people audition for the show in general, so I know I'm way over-analyzing this but I really obsess over audition pieces. I do have another woman who may be strong competition for the part)

I'd say overall, while its nice to have a song that suits your voice and suits the character, you're always in your own best interest to choose the song that is appropriate within your own voice. Although If I Loved You could technically represent Maria later on in the show as she is realizing that she is falling for the captain perhaps.

don't forget the stage version of SoM has Maria as an extremely low alto. Check out Mary Martin's stuff in South Pacific or I Do I Do

True...but in "Lonely Goatherd" she sustains an F (or G-I don't have my score...so I forget that part) a lot...and she also usually does that really high yodel at the end that touches a high B natural....
The rest of the score is pretty much in the middle range, with a higher note on her exit at the concert being the only other time she sustains anything high-ish...
I guess the general rule of thumb is to do the song that shows you of best...the song that best suits your voice. You can't make your voice do anything it's not ready to do. If "If I Loved You" is your best song, then I would do it. (Though it is a good idea to start working on songs like "Show Me" so you begin to get more comfortable with them so you can present something with a different vocal/character color.)
You should really try to build up the number of songs you are comfortable with so that you have something more appropriate for shows like that in the future.
In the meantime, especially if you need more time to work on "Show Me", I would do what you are most comfy doing...

Well noted.
We are doing the 1998 revival version of the show, and I'm not sure but I believe it is in the higher 'Julie Andrews' key. I have yet to buy the Rebecca Luker CD.
I do have many many audition songs, but like I said I really obsess over just the perfect one so that the director has no choice but to listen and say
" THIS is the woman for the part!"
I'm still working on Show Me, because I do like it, but if anything goes wrong or I think I might forget the words, I'll do something else.
Thanks everyone! There's about 3 weeks til auditions, so I'll let you know how it goes.

I was once cast as Maria using "How are Things in Glocca Morra". Its also very easy for an accompanist to sight read.

SOM-help picking a song for MariaTrue..the musical version of Maria is more of a Belty and deeper voice like Mary Martin, and Julie Andrews's version is lighter and more of a soprano vs. a Mezzo. I agree "Show Me" would be a good song, but for an audition you should sow your voice at it's best and be in character. I think South Pacific would be a good choice for an audition piece .."Wonderful Guy" isn't overdone. also maybe "I Could've Danced all Night" also from My Fair Lady. Good Luck
