SOM auditionI am auditionig for The Sound of Music and im trying to decide what to sing. They do not want something from the play itself, but i want something more soprano than alto because the director thinks im an alto but i can sing soprano easily and i like it better. Two songs i had in mind were "How lovely to be a woman" from bye bye birdie and "Simple joys of maidenhood" from Camelot. Are these okay? Any other suggestions would be great! I would like Liesl, but we dont audition for a specific part, so I could always end up looking like a head nun or Maria lol. Please heellpp. Im going out to look for sheet music soon. Thanks! |

I alays say sing a song you know REALLY well. If you have time, learn a new one to perfection but, if not, don't half learn one just for an audition.
This thread might help you. http://www.musicals.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=44654 Good Luck. |

"Simple Joys" isn't too bad a choice, since its also Julie Andrews BUT remember the stage version is a low alto key for Maria, NOT the movie key.

If you are looking for songs for Maria, I can suggest a few...
I Won't Mind (Audra McDonald) -This would be a good song because it is soprano, and in it you will be able to show off your ability to be motherly or governessly lol Beautiful song. Far From the Home I Love from Fiddler On the Steps of the Palace, from Into the Woods -Thought as Im sure you know some auditioners caution against Sondheim because of the complexity of it...so beware. The Light in the Piazza, from The Light in the Piazza If perhaps you become interested in the role of Elsa (which is a GREAT role if I do say so myself lol), here are a few suggestions: Someone Else's Story, from Chess Times Like This, from Lucky Stiff I Want to Go to Hollywood, from Grand Hotel Lion Tamer, from The Magic Show Break a leg! SOM was the best show I've ever been in. Love it!!! It's great fun, and yes...again break a leg! EDIT: By the way, the sheet music from most of these songs can be found at http://www.musicnotes.com but you can also track them down in any of the "Singers Musical Theatre Anthology" books...look in the soprano volume and the mezzo-soprano belter volume! |

"How Lovely To Be A Woman" would be perfect for an audition if you would like to be Leisl. The idea is basically similar to "Sixteen Going on Seventeen." Good choice! |

UPDATE: I auditioned with How lovely to be a woman, and got a callback. I sang for Mother Abess, and today i got the call that im Sister Margaretta. Im kind of dissapointed but whatever... its ok.

Congratulations on getting a callback, and for getting a role! I know it wasn't the role you wanted, which is always disappointing. But I think you'll find that you can have a lot of fun as Sister Margaretta.

that piece is hell for accompanists to play when they've never played it before, I caution against that one EDIT- I'm totally dumb, I read that as 'Beauty Is from LitP', which is the hellish one........I dont know about the theme |
