I am auditionig for The Sound of Music and im trying to decide what to sing. They do not want something from the play itself, but i want something more soprano than alto because the director thinks im an alto but i can sing soprano easily and i like it better. Two songs i had in mind were "How lovely to be a woman" from bye bye birdie and "Simple joys of maidenhood" from Camelot. Are these okay? Any other suggestions would be great! I would like Liesl, but we dont audition for a specific part, so I could always end up looking like a head nun or Maria lol. Please heellpp. Im going out to look for sheet music soon.

I alays say sing a song you know REALLY well. If you have time, learn a new one to perfection but, if not, don't half learn one just for an audition.

"Simple Joys" isn't too bad a choice, since its also Julie Andrews BUT remember the stage version is a low alto key for Maria, NOT the movie key.

-This would be a good song because it is soprano, and in it you will be able to show off your ability to be motherly or governessly lol Beautiful song.

EDIT: By the way, the sheet music from most of these songs can be found at http://www.musicnotes.com but you can also track them down in any of the "Singers Musical Theatre Anthology" books...look in the soprano volume and the mezzo-soprano belter volume!

"How Lovely To Be A Woman" would be perfect for an audition if you would like to be Leisl. The idea is basically similar to "Sixteen Going on Seventeen." Good choice!

UPDATE: I auditioned with How lovely to be a woman, and got a callback. I sang for Mother Abess, and today i got the call that im Sister Margaretta. Im kind of dissapointed but whatever... its ok.

Congratulations on getting a callback, and for getting a role! I know it wasn't the role you wanted, which is always disappointing. But I think you'll find that you can have a lot of fun as Sister Margaretta.
