So........"In the Heights"

This is what we've trained for, people: hip-hop has come to Broadway

We all knew it was coming. However, I've heard it's actually a good show, so I want to hear people's thoughts on it.

My fear is that it will be like Rent meets West Side Story, with a touch of Bring in 'da Noise,....
nabla

Rent vs. West Side Story is the very first thing i thought when i visited the website, lol
mastachen

You've trained for hip-hop coming to Broadway? Like you've taken rap/hip-hop classes?

That's totes awesome cuz I did that my first quarter this year and I couldn't keep up. lol But you say it like hip-hop coming to Broadway is a bad thing.
Rolling Eyes

Anyways, I don't see any similarities between WSS except that it's about Latinos set in NY.... so other than race, it's totally not the same at all. As for Rent... I can't even follow you there. It may have the same influence as Rent but only time will tell that.

I've heard the cast recording. Some of the lyrics are bad, and some are just brilliant. The music is decent and moving.

I've seen some videos... that girl's belting annoys me...

I didn't really like what I saw on the Tonys, but I've heard really good things about it. So I guess I can't really judge solely from that one number...I need to listen to the music, at least.

i'm obsessed with this show and even i wasn't that impressed with the tony performance. i feel like it was rushed too much Confused

I'm really curious about the show. It seems pretty good to me, so I might buy the cast recording...
MunkustrapQC

I totally fell in love with that show...
I bought the Cast Recording on amazon.com just 15 minutes ago

Well, it has certainly caught my interest after seeing its Tony performance. I think I might buy that recording as well
What you own

I have heard some of the music and i don't think its to bad. The reason there campoareing it to rent is it takes place in New York. And not the best place in New York City. RENT had new and inventive music for Broadway. It set the stanard for Rock Operas. It was revonlionary. There saying this might be revoliolionary like rent. And that it sets the stanard for hip hop broadway and is a new form of music to broadway. Find it funy though that this is the year ITH come to Broadway is the year RENT closes on b-way.

So....is the recording worth getting, then?

YES.

Alright. So when I first saw the tony award performance, I was extremely iffy about it. I thought the rap wasn't musical theatre. But out of curiousity, I bought the cast recording. I absolutely adore it. The lyrics are extremely clever. Sometimes I'm listening to it and I say "Oh my god, I would have never thought to rhyme that!" Of course the lyrics are sometimes really dumb but no musical can be perfect. The story is really brilliant. It creates yet another perspective of the world. And finally, the music. I am a really big music theory person and some of the intricate harmonies and contrary motion in the chords are incredible. My favorite song is Blackout because if you have amazing headphones like mine, you can actually hear EVERYTHING going on. And the chord towards the end, the word "sky" in the last "Light up the night sky." It gives me chills everytime. The only thing I'd change is a bit of the casting. Or even just telling some of the leads to get their voice out of their nose! But I still really enjoy the show.

Okay that's probably the most serious response I've ever given. So yes, it's most definetly worth buying =]

I only know that this show takes place in a Latino neighbourhood and includes hip-hop. What's the story, or theme?
Anno_Domini

They have the synopsis up on Wikipedia

That's true, thankyou. But sometimes I prefer not to read synopses. A blow-by-blow description of exactly what happens might ruin the process of discovering a show through seeing/hearing/reading it. In general terms, what is the show about? A tale of revenge, star-crossed love, an ensemble of wacky characters looking for the meaning of life...?

(Yay, my first post! I've been lurking for forever but finally got around to joining.)

The plot is harder to explain than some, because everyone sort of has their own stories.

The main message is about finding home, but not in a Wizard-of-Oz way, more like just feeling like you belong and have a place there.

(EDIT: I just realized I made a lovely first impression by bumping a month-old topic. >.<. I did a search for this show and I forgot I was on a search and not an actual board. Sorry all. Sad And sorry if I'm overreacting too, some forums I'm on get extremely mad when someone bumps a topic.)
Barberous

I don't mind. Wink Thanks for your answer.
Anyway, as long as there are still people interested in talking about something, who cares when a post was made. The alternative is to annoy the *other* half of a board by creating a new thread for the same topic. *shrug*
