So lemme see if I've got this straight...

Soprano:
Johanna

Mezzo:
Beggar?
Mrs. Lovett

Tenor:
Pirelli
Tobias
Beadle

Baritone:
Anthony
Todd
Judge

Is that right?
bwayluvor31

That's all correct except that Anthony is more of a tenor.
Ghost

Anthony is between Baritone and tenor and the Judge is a Bass-role.

does the Beadle HAVE to sing so impossibly high? i know it's not really impossible, but i'd love to play that role, but cannot go up there.

I think the songs in which many characters sing at once (i.e. the Ladies in their Sensitivites/Kiss Me sequence) it adds to the excitement. You can sing falsetto, though.
Mr_X

Whoever plays the Beadle definetely has to sing in falsetto in "Parlor Songs". There's even one occasion when I think he sings an octave ABOVE Mrs. Lovett.

By the way... I really consider Turpin a bass.

I would say Mrs. Lovett is an alto rather than a mezzo. I agree with the person who posted saying that Anthony is between a baritone and a tenor -- the role is definitely not a bass, but doesn't have much of a range. I agree with the person who posted saying that the Beadle goes practically impossibly high, and for that reason think the Beadle should be considered a countertenor role rather than a tenor role. And finally, I opine that the Judge's role is a bass role (rare in musical theatre) if his song Johanna is included, but a baritone role otherwise.
TychoBrahe

Turpin's Joanna should never be cut.
Bamford is a countertenor.

it's not THAT high....work on your falsetto
kittengoespop

No, for a man, the Beadle is ridiculously high. I mean, the man goes up to the E an octave above middle C. That's mezzo-soprano range right there.

Hands down, Beadle Bamford is a high counter-tenor role. Pirelli is awfully high as well, going to the C an octave above middle C. They're both very demanding singing roles.

What? Did someone say Jesus Christ Superstar?

Mr. Green

All of the characters in this show are rather rangey...most of which have to sing in between two ranges.

A Bass-baritone, baritenor, and a mezzo?

That's pretty hard for a bass, a baritone, and an Alto.
