Snoopy in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown

Here's the question - Have you heard of any productions of YAGMCB with a female playing Snoopy? What is your opinion?
Anno_Domini

I was IN a production where Snoopy was played by a female (I was Charlie Brown). And though she did an alright job, I would much prefer to have Snoopy played by a male. I mean, Schultz created the character as a male dog, and watching the show I never thought of him as anything but male.

Many directors cast a female as Snoopy because of how high the character needs to sing. But really, the range isn't THAT high.

When I did the show in middle school, Snoopy was played by a girl. In fact, all the characters were played by girls, because so few boys auditioned for the show. That's probably typical of youth productions. We pulled it off well, though I don't know if a female Snoopy (or a female Charlie Brown or Linus or Schroeder) would have felt right in a production that also had male actors or not.

When I did a Youth Theatre (5th-12th Grade) production of the original YAGMCB, our Snoopy was a girl. I think she was in 7th Grade. BTW, I was Linus in this production.

She did pretty good. Three kids got called back for Snoopy, and she beat out the two guys for it.

She got kinda high vocally though in Suppertime.

But still, pretty good.

I've seen a production with Snoopy played by a girl. It was certainly interesting, but looking back, I would have preferred Snoopy to be played by a boy.

She definitely pulled it off though!

When I did YAGMCB (first play EVAH) our director only auditioned girls for Snoopy. Our two girls did a great job, and I don't think it bothered anyone, since no one commented on it and I've seen productions with a girl Snoopy before.

Female CB/Linus/Schroeder, however...someone point me to THAT video >_>

I saw a college production with a female Snoopy. She stole the whole show. I do wonder what a boy would have been like though...

Schultz created Snoopy as a boy but if the girl does a better job than the boys cast the girl.

In my high school, snoopy was played by a girl. She just fit the part very well, and I think that's why she was cast.

When I did it Snoopy was played by a girl but that was because all of the guys who tried out were cast as the other parts.

We had a girl Snoopy and she was fantastic! Totally stole the show and none of us could deny it.

Yeah, Snoopy can easily steal the show.

It's such a fun character! I'd like to play him someday...

I LOVED playing Linus though. Lots of people thought I fit the part to a T. But that's off-topic, so I'll just shut up. Laughing

as a proud chick snoopy, i guess i had to reply here.

when i played snoopy, i approached it as a male character even though i was a girl. it was just how i saw it. i think if the actress who plays snoopy keeps that in mind, she'll pull it off. if she doesn't, she'll fail. snoopy comedy is guy comedy.

obviously, i think the part is easier for a guy to play. but often in high school situations, a lot of guys don't have the comic timing, personality or range to do a part and they'll give it to a girl.
Not Dead Yet

I saw a High School production with a female Snoopy and I was disappointed. I would have preferred a male but the role itself has SO much freedom and I didn't get that from the girl's performance.

It seemed like the only guys who could carry a tune were cast in guy parts, and then they decided Snoopy didn't necessarily HAVE to be a guy. Later I found out that they only cast that particular chick as Snoopy because she was in their Drama Club officers, so basically just through status.

Whatev, I think it can be done well by a girl, as long as, like thexredxbaron said, they keep the male perspective when playing the role.
