SLS Technique

Is anyone familiar with the Speech Level Singing Technique? Have you taken lessons on this or studied it at all?

I had never heard of it before until this week. (Am I just living under a rock?) A girl I know has been studying it for years and just recently passed her certification test to become a Level 1 instructor.

It seems interesting. What are your thoughts? Experience?

I think there's been some other threads on SLS. And I'm gonna say about the same thing I said in all them.

Classical singers dislike SLS for the most part. And since I see classical voice teachers and read classical singing literature, I am of course biased as well.

SLS does seem like crap for the most part.
1 - their selling point is - expand your range! sing 4 octaves! whoopty shitt who cares about being able to reach those notes. if you sound like crap singing them, no one's gonna cast/hire you. any method that focuses just on range is stupid and pandering to stupid singers.
2 - when their teachers and methods do succeed and help their students, they are essentially just using good bel canto and classical singing technique without giving them the credit. i've read stories about SLS teachers giving master classes and students/teachers recognizing their vocalises as those of old bel canto teachers.

That's not to say I haven't heard good SLS singers. But I bet those people would be just as good or better with a regular ol classical teacher.

I agree, range isn't always good. Especially if you are young--there's a big difference between you can hit those notes and you should hit those notes.
A friend of mine was did SLS and went on to attempt very difficult songs with her new expanded range. Now at 15 she has had three surgeries for nodes. Shocked

Yeah I am not a fan at all. For the reasons mentioned above - I did a couple of classes with an SLS teacher and it's the only time my voice has seriously hurt.
