Singing things you know you won't getWhat do you think about the following situation:
It's a musical callback. The director welcomes anyone to sing for anything they want. Each main character(s) is associated with a slice of the appropriate song.
Do you attempt to sing for a role you know you aren't appropriate for just to keep heard some more? And I'm not talking about range, I'm talking more about look, sound, etc.
Do you think it will lower your value singing for something that you're mediocre at after doing very well singing something that you are totally appropriate for?
Thanks

They always say reach for parts you know you might not be able to get, but at this point, it's wise to go for someone you know you'll be good at and may get cast at.
Big Role You Can't Get < Role Your Better At and Can Get.
Always.

Oh of course you should always try for what you think you can get.
What I'm saying is if I already sang for the role I am perfect for and they let anyone who wants to sing for other roles as they want, should I do it?
Will it lower my value in their eyes for the main role I was good for? Or does it matter?

I would say that it depends on the reason you think you aren't right for the other role. For example. if its an extremely obvious thing, like singing for a male part if you're a female, or an ingenue when you know you can't play ingenues, then yes- it might not look too good. You mentioned sound- I would say this would only be a concern for a REALLY OVERDONE/famous movie musical, like Grease, where every character's type-vocal and appearance, are practically set in stone. Other than that, its hard to know what the director would like to see in the character- so I'd say go for it as long as it isn't a show like Grease.
In terms of range, if the part isn't in your range, and you're going to end up squeaking out unsavory notes, then I wouldn't suggest you sing for it either. That might negatively affect the way they saw your audition for the other role
P.S. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, too!

Thanks!
Basically it was a Seussical callback.
After waiting an hour and a half for them to sing through EVERY COMBINATION of the 3 bird girls and some mayzies, I finally got to sing for Horton. (yay)
I nailed it. Absolutely nailed it.
Then later they wanted people to sing Wickershim brothers. I figured what the heck. I'm can dance but I know I am not a dancer type they are probably looking for so I sing for it. Not only that but since they didn't have a lot of bass singers to try for the bassline they pointed to me for it (since I was standing on the end). I didn't mind. I can hit the notes but I'm not a legitamate bass. The music director let everyone sing at least once and then called mized up combinations of people he obviously liked. Obviously I'm not a bass and he chose another guy who had a really good low voice to keep singing the bass line. What I think though is at least it showed him I could sing harmony even though I wasn't really bass singing.
Then I sung the Cat part. (along with MOST of the other guys at the audition). It wasn't brilliant. I'd say I was mediocre compared to some others but I had some character and such in the performance.
Again showed some range some character. Reminding the MD that I'm a baritone that can sing up (hopefully ) . And demonstrated another character other than Sad Horton so that in case I don't get Horton they see thigns like the Mayor, The General, The Grinch, etc as possibilities for me.
But of course the nagging doubts never shut up. Was I better off not singing anything else in the callback but the Horton song which went very well?
I wish I could shut my mind off from these stupid questions
