Singin in the Rain? So, I know, It's an incredible movie, and I love it, but, have any of you seen the stage version? Is it alot different? I'm going to be involved in a production of it this summer.. (really hoping for Kathy Selden.. so.. any tips are welcome) and I'm just wondering how this show transforms from screen to stage?

It's virtually identical on stage, except that you are competing with the happy memories people have of the movie. The Broadway Rhythm section doesn't necessarily have the "girl in the green dress" role in the stage version - it's up to the director. I've done it twice and one did and the other didn't.
The main thing is to be a great tapper and singer for Kathy! And chemistry with "Don" never hurts.

I was in the show. Played Cosmo Brown. There is this expectation that somehow, no matter what you will be able to reproduce the film performances on stage. I think a few people did say "But in the film..." type comments but it was generally well recieved. There are some extra scenes compared to film, these are mainly to progress the plot/establish the scene/fill time. Unlike the film Lina Lamont gets a song, but quite often people cut this because it wasn't in the film! Also we did ALL the music in the show, not one bar was cut. I.e we had set choreography for ALL of Broadway Rythum, and Good Mornin'. My advice is do some general keep fit. Kathy does an aweful lot of dancing, well she did in our production. Although saying that me (mr two left feet) did too. My worst memory was rehearsing good morning in 35 degree heat in our rehearsal room, with no wind or air conditioning!! NEVER again!
Above all the show was sooo much fun. Love every second of it. Don't be afarid to do it your own way. Don't try to BE the film. And remember...it can only rain on stage once....although how we didn't all get killed when 60 of us opened umbrellas indoors i don't know!!!!

Kathy has these songs -
All I do (Dance number - optional lead voals)
You are my lucky Star (solo)
Good Mornin' (Solo lines with Don and Cosmo)
Would you x 2 (Dubbing for Lina -Sometimes pre-recorded depending upon direction)
The finale Would you - Sung behind curtain for Lina
Lucky Star- Reprise (with Don)
Finale Music
Range is well...im not 100% but we had a mezzo sop.

so for the audition, I'm pretty sure we have to do a song from the show.. what would you recommend for me to take to my vocal coach? (yes.. 2 months before.. because I'm so excited about this.)

..I'm begining to get really excited about this show.
But a friend just put the question in my mind as to wether I should go for Lina or Kathy.
Could someone give a detailed description of both characters?
I'm 5'5", black/brown hair, black/brown eyes, Mezzoish Legit Soprano.. fairly weak belt in all actuality. Range up to top E, Most comfortable in middle areas.. but down to.. well, I'm not exactly sure. GishA below middle C. Dancing.. I am not technically trained.. but I can tap (fairly well.. working on my triple time step..) and I'm taking both Tap and Ballet classes before I'll be auditioning for the show.. Acting-wise.. characters I've played in the past seem to be the ingenue-esque romantic strong-willed.. so.. Kathy fits my previous experience.. but..should I go for something new?
What do you all think, which should I go for, Kathy or Lina?

Well in my experince you have to have so much confidence in your acting abilyt to play Lina as her horrendous voice is essential...otherwise you loose alot of humour and if her voice is nice what is the point of Kathy dubbing her?! On the other hand Lina also sings horrendously...i don't know. If your used to playing charcaters like Kathy then audition for her. But if you'd like a bit of a challenge go for Lina. Otherwise audition for both..or ask to be considered for both!

I think I'm going to stick with Kathy.. but now.. just out of curiosity..
which part do you all think is more fun to play, Kathy, or Lina?
my opinion is Lina would be more fun, more glamourous and outlandish..not your every day character.. but Kathy is your typical Romantic lead.. which is always fun to play..especially when you've got a crush on your opposite

LIna is much more fun..you don't need to take it seriously! LOL! AND you get to play around a little. Kathy is quite 2dimensional in that respect!
