Similar shows? What other musicals are simillar in style as JCS?
Such as music, dramatic effect, etc?
I love the show and was wondering if there are any others that are similar. Especially music-wise. It seems like such a unique style of musical theater.

I think the only show that is somewhat similair would be "Evita". JCS started or made popular, I think the string of "Rock Operas" or "Pop Operas" that would dominate the Musical Theatre for the 70's-80's. JCS was a forerunner for "Phantom" and "Les Mis"

Evita, really? I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Evita, but I've never thought of it as being stylistically comparable to JCS. But of course, I've always seen JCS as being in a class by itself. Nothing has ever impacted me quite the same way.

Evita is done in the same concept as JCS. A sung-through rock-opera about a powefrul leader figure and the sceptic narrator questioning his/her actions.
The "rock" element was later pretty much stripped from Evita, but if you listen to the concept album, you'll see they are quite similiar.

Haha wow. I just listened to some samples of the Evita Original London Cast recording on iTunes, and the instrumental work actually is somewhat reminiscent of JCS. I never knew that. Very bizarre.

I'd go with Chess - it's similar in that it's pretty much sung through and the range for Judas would suit Freddie and Jesus - Anatoly. Often the singer who have played one role have played the other.

Judas = Freddie (sometimes. zubin and murray have done it, but it's not really in their range, they both failed live at singing pity the child) I'd say Jesus isn't really suited for Anatoly unless you thinking Eric Kunze.

Tommy anyone?

The "Broadwayified" Tommy is really nothing like JCS. The Album...it's better than JCS but in the same vein. But Des MacNuff's piece of crap isn't really anything like JCS.

As a show I think it's a trainwreck, but there are some fun songs in it.

I'd go with the Alice Cooper album "Welcome To My Nightmare" and the concert video (available on DVD) as the closest thing to the sound of Jesus Christ Superstar I can think of off the top of my head, actually. The concert even has its parallels to the original JCS production, with its shadowy "tormentor" figures. Check it out and see.

I admit I preferred Zubin to Murray. (My favourite Freddie is Anders Ekborg...and the guy who played it in our production - but of course I'd be biased). However, I saw a production of Chess in Germany with Andy Kuntz who played both Jesus and Anatoly - superb!

I don't think that Tommy is similar to JCS. The music is much more trippier, and when watching Tommy, it's easier to get lost on what the story is all about, with JCS, Jesus' story is right there, in your face. The characters are tripped out as well (i.e. the Acid Queen, the ghost of Cap. Walker, his dunkle, his crazy mother.) In JCS, the characters have raw emotion.
if that made any sense at all.

Tommy sucks. HAiR rocks and features rock music, but is VERY different.

HAiR was the inspiration for JCS. Rice has said so on several occasions.
And, TOMMY does not suck.

I have heard some arguements that HAiR is secretly a modern hippie version of Jesus Christ's life
But anyways I would think that JCS fans would like HAiR.
