Silliest things you have heard about RENT.

*Trembles Oh my god. I'm makeing a seperate topic!* I saw this on the Les Mies fourm so I wanted to know what was the silliest things you have heard about RENT?

One of mine

In April when I went to see RENT for my 13th b-day I also went with my Aunt,my Mom and my best friend Emily. After the show all four of us where on the train back home and talking about how great the show was. What songs we liked what parts we liked and how the guy playing Roger had a spitting porb. E.T.C. So while we where discussing this Emily all the sudden goes "Ohhhh I get it" I looked at her and said "get what?" Emily repilied " I get it the lanturn on the stage was supposed to me a moon!" The 3 of us just looked at her in shoocked and just statred laughing. between laughs my mom was able to ask "Emily what did you think it was?" Emily explained " I thought it was just a lanturn, you know like the lanturns for your room the ones you can get a potary barn and stuff" (The thought of Roger and Mark goign to potary barn almost made me wet my pants.) Emily continued " I mean no one ever came out said thats a moon!" "Well of course Emily" I said "since they thought that most people would under stand that its a moon. Espically when there are various refreces to it. Like I don't know OVER THE MOON!" Later that night as we where getting off the train my Aunt ponited up at the moon and said to Emily "Emily look a lanturn!"

One person said. "I don't get it. No day but Tuesday? Whats happening on Tuesday?"

You often hear people say Rent is about "gay people and AIDS". Rolling Eyes

That's how it's referred to here. Sad And most of the kids who call it that actually SAW the show!

someone told me that RENT was based on Pirates of Pezance which is an Opera about pirates who get syphilis from some prostitutes in New York.

I then (nonchalantly) replied " Oh really, I was under the impression that it was based on La Boheme."
"No, musicals are rarely based on straight plays."
"Oh, I didn't know that- I'm more partial to opera myself" I said with slight sarcastic undertones.

People in my community are convinced that Rent is the dirtiest musical ever.
I kindly point them in direction to Spring Awakening.

I was talking to a 13 year old girl from Florida, and mentioned Rent, and she goes "ew, Rent is a gay musical"

Yes, but it's also so much more than that. And, I can understand why it annoys him, because in today's society, being labeled as "that gay musical about AIDS" makes it something insignificant to most of straight society (not straight theatre-goers, obviously). It's how it's marketed. If you say it is "a musical about artists' struggles and living life in the moment"...it has a better connotation to it.

All true but I don't think their fans would appreciate them being described like that!

Yeah I know. I noticed right after I posted I was like oh crap. But tiles can't be changed. That I know of. So *Shrugs* I'll have to endur the wrath of TVAW. The funny part is I whole heartly agree withher. I am a tiny bit of a grammer nazi. But my fingers +keyboard= awdrihfiohsdg'gh. So I deserve it.

So right after the movie came out, some of my friends were like, "That's so not what I thought it was about! I thought it was about these people who couldn't pay their rent so they put on a Christmas play to raise the money!" Smile
