Of course, by voting for 'atmosphere' I do sort of mean "so long as the costumes still maintain the basic 'look' of Cats" - colours and patterns you can go nuts on, but it helps if you can still identify who's who.

Pretty much. As long as you can tell who's who, and that their cats.
For example: Macavity having mange, and looking almost like the living dead.

Regional productions should be made thier own, but still maintain the CATS atmosphere. I don't mind change of setting like from the Junkyard to the Carnival (I think its so cool) but sometimes character designs get a little out of hand and don't look like cats anymore.

Could it be set in a backyard?

I said no, only because Gothenburg had a green Electra and a blue Etcetera and I've seen pink cats floating around somewhere *shivers*. Oh man, that gave me nightmares. But I do think it's okay, as long as... well... the colors are not... pink or blue or green or purple or any color a cat shouldn't be.
On the flip side, Gothenburg was staged in an abandoned amusement park. Now that I really, really, really, really, really liked. A lot.

To me, as long as the atmosphere is the same, and cats look like cats... go ahead ! I think it great to let regional production chose for example another kind of stage (not junkyard type).

I think as long as you can tell that they're cats and you can tell the character's apart then why not change it up a bit.

But with the Gothenburg, if I hadn't known better, they wouldn't have looked like cats.
I've gotta post my above example's sketch.

YAH! MAKe Old D Green!
Originality is the spice of life. I see it daily in my job. it is the difference, the diversity, and the creativity, that makes EVERY production of cats unique and magical.
sure everyone wants the video, or the tour.... or london... but recall you the ORIGINAL?
recall you amature productions, or pink cats? green toms in obscure foreign productions?
look upon the elegance and mystery and fun of japan.
Be creative, BE original, and make it more enjoyable not only for the cast and crew, but also for the audience who will be expecting Cats and will see something totally unique and unexpected...something they will feel treated to, and will hold in their memories, and dreams for years to come.
make the world a bit more exciting, and find the easter egg of delights in your own abilities, talents, and originality.
MAke Old D green.

As long as "Creativity" isn't used as an excuse for "laziness", I love it! If a production tries to pass off black scoop-neck unitards as their design concept, I'm not impressed, that's not creative, that's laziness. Of course there's budget limitations, but that can fire creativity. Too often it seems not to tho.
I'm not sure about a PINK kitty... but incorporating pink shading in say, Victoria, looks lovely. I'd love to see pink, blue, green, used in the hatching on otherwise conventional costumes...

Yeah.
In the production I'm designing, produsing, directing and so forth, I don't want to comprimise design for budget AND it costs the same almost to buy scoopnecks as it is to make crewneck or turtleneck unis. (I've done the research.)
I've cut down the cast to bare minimum (almost), but I've added original ideas and new concepts. I've cut Etcetra and Electra (unfortunatly), but I'm able to add a 'memory' for Grizabella, and make Macavity's henchcats far more magical.
Thank's for your opinions and input. Thank's Belle and RollerBoy, for ideas and insperation. I was exaggerating with the whole "making Old D green" thing, but it's helped me have the courage to alter these designs to suit my personal beliefs.
I want to make these Jellicles of mine more magical, but not rediculously so.

For our production, we created a completely different look for a majority of the characters, which was refreshing, since so many companies try to match the original desgns. We also set it in a construction site, instead of a junkyard. Some examples (click to make them bigger):

Those look great, Candleshoe!
But I don't think I'd call those designs completely different - the colouring is unique, and cool, lovely movement to it, but you're still looking at unitards, warmers and wigs. Tugger still has a mane, Old D has the huge coat... I'd call those costumes a unique, personal twist on the traditional designs. I think it works really well! I love the boldness of the designs, must have made it easy for the audience to keep track of who is who.

Indeed, and by being unique you are so much more serving the audience, the cast, and yourself.
we look forward to photo's or even youtube videos of your masterful production, and I am cheering for you all the way!
You WORK it Gurl-friend!

I think its ok to add your own take on things. For our production the stage is set up as Gus's old theatre- we have a giant vanity, ghost light, old flats from past productions, and tons of other giant random props. We also are not having Macavity come on stage at all, which I'm not exactly sure how its going to work with the fight scene, but the director is really into the idea of never seeing the villian.
