Should Las Vegas do a CATS spectacular as well as PotO?Just got this advance ticket offer from Broadway Across America. I think Las Vegas is going to do a Phantom of the Opera super spectacular.
| Broadway Across America wrote: | Set in a new $40 million state-of-the-art theatre and directed by 20-time Tony Award winner Hal Prince, Phantom at The Venetian® is a can't-miss experience and promises surprises that will astound even the biggest Phantom fans:
Reconceived by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Hal Prince and members of the original
creative team into a spectacular $35 million, 95-minute production.
Includes each and every song from the original production.
Spectacular sets, enhancing and expanding the original Tony Award-winning
designs of Maria Bjornson.
A breathtaking chandelier experience unlike anything you have ever seen! |
Do you suppose a similar production using CATS would work? I mean all the stuff CATS does fits right in with Las Vegas' image of show and spectacle.

I think a Las Vegas version of Cats would be incredible!
Wow, just the idea of it is making me excitable

I don't think I would like it.
I loved the Vegas version of Starlight Express, but it was the only one I had ever seen. Not having seen a previous production to compare it with, I was able to enjoy it for what it was.
But because I've seen other productions of Cats, and because the show is so dear to my heart, I wouldn't like the cuts they would have to make to get the show down to 90 minutes. Heck, I'm already upset with the cuts they've made for the 5th National Tour. I can't even imagine what they would have to cut to hold the attention spans of gamblers and tourists in Las Vegas.
I'm very skeptical about this Vegas Phantom production. It's another show I think I would hate to see butchered.

Naming, Bustopher, huge chunks of the ball including Jellicle Songs, pekes, growltiger, and other various bits here and there, etc...
I've seen quite a few casino version of the V tour on the Gulf Coast.
(Though it will be a long long long time till I see another since the casino complex was demolished after was pushed from the sound over the beach and onto the highway by 30-ft of water.)

I woul'd like a Vegas production of Cats... I'm already quit sceptical with the Phantom... but I love too much Cats to see it cut and changed that way.

Yay, someone sgrees with me!
Well, in response to the 'cuts arguments'... just think of it as a huge, spectacular concert, or a scratch version. I have performed in both a full version and a Scratch version, and both worked well.

Actually, I think Cats would work better as a Vegas show than Phantom will. Cats just feels so energetic and pop compared to Phantom... I dunno, the pseudo-opera doesn't seem to fit with Vegas in my mind.
I imagine that they'd play up the Ball- maybe even an extended version.

CATS in concert is not a great idea... a topic popped up here a little while ago about how the tour had to go 'concert' for a performace and it didn't over very well at all.
What is the show without the fantastic lighting, dance, and other movement? Les Mis worked in concert because it tells a story... CATS isn't a story... it's a spectacle.
As for which would work better in Vegas... I'd say Phantom just because of it's reputation. More people would flock to it.

Actually, I agree with you ^_^
But I think that the songs work well as stand alone pieces, and that in true Las Vegas style, the spectacle that is casino-spectaculars, they might be able to pull it off.
And I also agree that more people would flock to Phantom; undeservadly over Cats, but I agree

I think a Vegas version of CATS would be awesome! And although cuts would be sad it wouldn't be to hard.. i know some people already mentioned a few of these but personally i would cut:
Bustopher, Naming, Moments of Happiness, Growltiger, parts of Jellicle Songs, a verse in Skimble, a verse in Gus etc etc etc.. that's just off the top of my head, I'm sure if I actually found my music somewhere in this messy room I could figure out some more.. actually, that would be kind of interesting to arrange.

Haven't they said that they kept all the original music? I've heard the term 're-imagining'... but the impression that I got was that they were going to build the theatre to fit Phantom, instead of Phantom fitting into the theatre.
So... a theatre built for CATS I think would be awesome.

I don't know how they can keep all the songs in PotO and squeeze it down. The New York show advertises that it is 2 hours and 30 minutes including intermission. So an intermission is...what....15 to 20 minutes? So they have to squeeze out 35 to 40 minutes? Or maybe pick-up the tempo of the music?
As for CATS, I guess they'd have the same time problem but a lot of CATS can be dropped without affecting the story.

I feel like a Casino Cats would be horrible, especially if they do have to cut it down to 90 minuts. Plus, Las Vegas is often too commercial and likes to do it's their way, so I would rather keep Cats in better suited theaters.
PotO thought could be done a bit more decently, I guess. I have never seen it, so I cant tell much, but I know the story would be easier to fit in 90 minuts than it would be for Cats.
As Nemi said, Cats without lignthing and spectacular dancing wouldnt be Cats. So yeah, I wish Vegas doesnt ever put it up, unless they do it whole. ^^ But that's my opinion.
