Should Joseph be allowed to be performed in schools

Do you think Joseph should be allowed to be performed in schools even though it is based on a biblical story?

I think it should because schools have done Godspell, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Fiddler on the Roof and they all have to do with religion and I don't have a problem with schools doing religious shows as long as they're not offending anyone. I'm Jewish and I don't find it inappropriate for a school to do Godspell. Godspell is actually one of my favorite shows.

What do you think?

Of course it should be. It's a fun, easy show for kids to do. It was written for schools. And no one would ever let it be restricted to schools. It's a tradition for literally hundreds of schools all around the globe.

As well, if the school is a religious school it only strengthens the curriculum, making it more of a better choice with the administration.

Absolutely! Joseph was originally conceived for a school. It's perfect for young people to learn about the theatre. This musical also tells a story. It's not preachy. The story has biblical origins, but that doesn't mean that it should be off-limits to the schools.

Is it even religous? Other than bein based on a bible story.

Besides the fact that the idea came from the Bible, there's nothing 'holy' in it at all. Except for when Joseph's coat gets ripped - it becames extremely hole-y!!! Bahahahahaha!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

d'oh! Terrible, I tell you.
Sweeney Hyde

If a school can't do Joseph then it can't do Godspell, Fiddler On the Roof, Lost in Stars, Carousel, The King and I, etc.

I find this thread ridiculous.

I found it funny.

If a school wishes to ban Joe, they should ban sex education. The whole "reproduction" thing is the story of Adam Eve, so, yeah.

I like to think I'm good politics.

Ya lost me. Completely.

I'm very sure that any school can have fun with Joseph, regardless of whether it's religious or not. I think every student will have a rollicking great time with its toe-tapping and memorable music, funny lyrics and captivating story. The international school where I studied staged the musical twice.

Ignore me, I like to think I'm clever. Smile
Beagle On Stage

My public high school put on a production of "Joseph," and everyone had a great time with it. There was no problem with the fact that it's based on a story from the Bible.

When people have a problem with "Dreamcoat," it's usually because they don't really know the show and assume that since the story is found in the Bible, the show must be religious. I wouldn't compare it to "The King and I," "Fiddler on the Roof," etc. Those shows may be about religious people, but no one considers them to be religious stories. There are Catholic and Lutheran characters in "Grease," and that's not going to be considered a religious show anytime soon.

I think people forget that this is old testerment. Joseph exists in the christian, Jewish, and Moslem religians.

Yes, but there could be students of faiths other than Christian and Jewish. Muslims do not believe in the Old Testament, they only believe in the Torah (first 5 books) and the Psalms, and anything that agrees with the Quan. Also, please do not call them Muslims, the word that you used is an offensive taboo term for someone who follows the religion of Islam.
