Should I see Gypsy or Phantom of the Opera?

I've already seen BATB, Hairspray, and I'm going to be seeing Wicked and RENT. I'm 13, and I've really jsut started getting into theatre this last year. I know (as in, have the cast recording, know the plot line, etc) most of the well-known musicals, like Wicked, Hairspray, LB, Les Miz, Mamma Mia, Spring Awakening, Chicago, Spelling Bee, Swet Charity (not THAT well known, but yea) etc. Now I'm trying to get into other musicals, especially more deep ones (POTO), and especially am trying to learn lots more about Sondheim. Currently I have West Side Story, and that's about it.

Gypsy - I've heard really good things. And FREAKIN PATTI LUPONE! [:
POTO - I feel like I'm theatrically deprived not knowing this one. It seems every theatre person must know it. I know a couple of a songs, and from what I know, it seems really good. I've also heard great things about this.

Both shows are good entertainment. If it wasn't for Patti Lupone I'd go for Phantom, but with Patti playing Mama Rose I'd pick Gypsy.
Trevor reincarnate

Considering my deep love for Sondheim and my deep dislike for Andrew Lloyd Webber, I'd go with Gypsy.

Espessially since Gypsy is one of the best musicals ever written.

Gypsy for sure, it has Patti Lupone as Mama Rose. Phantom is good but I would see Gypsy first, also try August, Osage County (I'm not sure I spelled it right)
Luc

Phantom plays professionally in SO many different places, and you only get to New York so often... especially when LuPone happens to be in Gypsy. The thrill of seeing her live on Broadway in this role will only be there so long- Phantom comes and goes across the continent quite often. I'd go for Gypsy. The chances of catching LuPone again are a lot less than catching Phantom again.

OMG, Gypsy for SURE!
Lupone will only be on Broadway for so long, especially in that role. She's absolutely brilliant, so trust me you won't be disappointed. This is your once-in-a-lifetime chance to see Lupone in Gypsy. Besides, it's a Sondheim, which is always fantastic, and Webber (don't kill me, Webber fans!) is swill anyways.

Also, if you're trying to learn about Sondheim, this is my go-to list of sure fire ways to get someone hooked on ol' Steve:

-Into the Woods (!!!!! This is my love)
-Sweeney Todd (I personally prefer the 'In Concert!' DVD, but try to OBC DVD first)
-Gypsy
-West Side Story

Do ItW first, because trust me you. will. be. hooked.
At least, that's my humble opinion. Cool

I agree. POTO plays a lot more, and would be easier to see some other time. It's not ALW best anyway.

(Into the Woods is fantastic!)

Gypsy, definitely
Amber

Gypsy all the way.

A friend of mine recently went to see the Broadway production of Phantom of the Opera, and said the cast was boring and looked really tired onstage. Catch that one when it's on tour and you have a cast that's excited to do the show.

Even if they're not all that good...

I want to see it soooo bad...I doubt I'll get there though...

Heheheheh. You would think, with all the insane POTO fans I happen to be aquainted with (on this site and off), that there would be at least a few votes for POTO... Laughing

"catching LuPone again"

Catching Lupone in this role!!

That's the deciding factor. Luc makes some excellent points. I agree with most.

Yeah, Gypsy is a once in a life time opportunity. Seeing one of Broadway's living legends in a role she considers to be the role of a lifetime.

Buy the PotO OBC, or catch it on a tour. It's gonna be pretty much the same as it is on Broadway. Spoiler Alert: A chandelier falls down!
Salome

Gypsy. its one of the 10 greatest musicals off all time. Phantom is pop fluff.

The POTO OBC? Do you just mean the CD?

GYPSY.

I cannot help but restate this, but Phantom never ever had any Broadway cast recording at all. The only full-length official Phantom cast album in English is the London West End cast album with Brightman and Crawford.
Anno_Domini

Both shows are bloody incredible. Masterpieces to be sure. But, as has already been said, you can catch a touring production of Phantom easily. But LuPone as Mama Rose is a once in a lifetime opportunity
