Should I even Audition?

Because of the Centennial and all, the annual musical my church puts on is going to be Oklahoma!. This is fine (no major complaints here) but I'm just wondering if I should even bother to audition, or just spend my summer sitting on the couch.

But what, pray tell, is the problem? Well, I'm only 17. And the part I want, Ado Annie, is between 25 and 35. Yeah, I know it depends on who the guys are...If they're in their thirties, I have absolutely no chance. But still...I'm unsure of if I even want to get stuck in chorus, when I could be benefitting myself elsewhere (other shows, etc) and getting better roles.

My range? Alto/mezzo, from about a low f/g to a high d (on a good day) belt. Yes, I can hit practically every note (except that very last 'cain't', but lots of people who've had the role of Annie in the past haven't been able to hit it either...I'll work on it, believe me), and I have a really good chance of getting the part vocally, if only not for the age difference.

So, what are your thoughts? Think I should try, or ditch this show for something better? Thanks!!!

Always audition. You can always decline ensemble if you don't get Ado A. Or if they give you the option, let them know upfront that you're only interested in a particular role. It never hurts to audition as long as your ego can take the potential rejection.

Audition!
Sometimes being in the ensemble is more fun than being a lead. Plus, it would be great experience regardless. And it's definitely more fun than sitting on the couch all Summer.

See, at 20, I played opposite a guy who was...38? We were supposed to look around the same age. I don't think it really matters as long as you look the part. This guy looked a lot younger than almost 40, I'd have guessed him at 25-30, so it worked. Age differences in theater can be covered so easily.

PS: Even being in the ensemble is better than sitting on your tuckus.

Both our Ado and Will were high school seniors this year when our community theatre did it.
