Shine A Light

Shine a Light is the latest documentary by famed director Martin Scorsese. It was a filming of two performances of the 2006 Rolling Stones tour.

I guess I should give full disclosure that there was a wine tasting preceding the showing of the film so it might have put me in a good mood. That said, I thought Shine a Light was a terrific film. Can't think when I've enjoyed a film more. We had the benefit of the keyboardist giving a brief background about the film before the screening (he lives in Georgia). Plus it was on a widescreen and the volume was close to rock concert level so it was hard to distinguish the cheers from the film audience and the theater audience. The film was that involving! The last two songs had us singing the chorus along with Mick.

The film starts out with the planning of the concert and Scorsese trying to get a song order from the band. It's then the concert. It's brilliantly filmed with short interview vignettes inserted to contrast their early years with the present "old" rockers. Christina Aguilera is one of the guest performers and even Bill and Hillary make an appearance before the concert. It's fun to see how Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards work their craft but what impressed me was the charisma given off by Jagger. He's not much of a singer but he is entertaining to watch.

The film got justifiably good reviews. Honestly, I'm not a particular fan of the Stones but after the film was over...I was thinking..."That is the best band EVER!" Wink

I thought this was a thread about Wolf Parade.
