You are not alone! (ha, ha, a touch of sondheim!)

Seussical is awesome.

Teeheehee. Great music, fun characters, lots to do. I particularly enjoyed the Who Christmas Pageant where I was supposed to be three sheets to the wind... Mr. Mayor practically gave me that scene on a silver platter with the way in which he said his monologue about how "thigns smashed and things tore"... it was so incredibly easy to upstage him, and I just kept on getting drunker and drunker in that scene, and one night as I chucked the martini glass offstage to just drink straight from the bottle, I got so caught up in the action happening on the stage that when I chucked it behind me into Whoville, I kind of missed my target (a techie) by about two feet and it smashed into the wall... the Grinch just gave me this "Oh my God!" look and almost started to laugh, and Mr. Mayor did practically the same thing, but I just kept on drinkin'... the audience got a real kick out of me smashing that martini glass and it was a complete accident... the director was SO angry at me afterwards... I didn't really care though, lol. The producer thought it was hilarious, as did most of the other people in the case and crew... hehe. Good times, good times...

GlamorousGriz

Oh, it was great. One of the best moments I have ever had on a stage.
GlamorousGriz

I just remembered another Seussical incident.

During "Solla Sollew", the mayor and I were up on the cat perch with lights shining up on us reading JoJo's letter. (It makes better sense with a picture of the set, but anyway). The Cat's tail as a boa and somehow, she, who was also in the cat perch (but on a lower level) accidentally let her tail out of one of the little cat holes and it was resting on the light that was shining up on us... well, the d--- thing started to catch on fire...

I didn't remember this happening because I never really noticed it because of the scene, but I saw a cast member earlier today and she reminded me that the Cat's tail had caught on fire...

wow....you have some...um..."interesting" experiences! Wink
GlamorousGriz

Yeah... well, the casts that I work with are always "interesting"...
MrsJamieWellerstein

It's not my favorite, but it is pretty good. It's a lot of fun to see. The recording...notsomuch. You lose the visual effect of the costumes, the strangeness of the characters (how can you not call Gertrude McFuzz strange?)...all that good stuff. Also, the OBC has singers that I don't like nearly as much as the cast I saw. Most notably, I don't care for Horton or the Sour Kangaroo.
GlamorousGriz

I just don't care for the character of the Sour Kangaroo, period, but the girl who did it in our cast was really good.

I'm mad there's not an official recording with Cathy Rigby as the Cat.
B3TA07

My friend has the part of Gertrude. I like her solo at the end of the show...and the Overture. The OBC cat is a little over the top, and unfortunately knowing the actor who will be playing him in my friend's production, I can expect that again.
GlamorousGriz

^ Overture is amazing. Every time I hear an orchestra tuning, I half expet the electric guitar to follow it...

Always remember: It could be Rosie O'Donnel.

i am playing flute in the band in an upcoming production of Seussical. Has anyone played it before?
musicluvr77

I didn't like Seussical the first time I heard it, with the exception of Oh, The Thinks You Can Think, Notice Me, All For You, and Solla Sollew. The only reason I listened to it was because my school was doing it. However, I ended up getting cast as a Bird Girl and it was the most fun experience of my life. The music grows on you and you find it's in your head ALL THE TIME. Haha. I really miss that show...

Stupid question, the answer of which is likely to be no: Were you with Winthrop Playmakers?

Because that rocked.
JazzyTapper64

Just curious, am I the only one who really prefers the Broadway version over the tour version (the one they use for school/community theatre shows)? It could just be because this is the show that got me into musical theatre (I was basically obsessed with it in the 4th/5th grade after seeing it on Broadway), but for some reason, many aspects of the tour really annoyed me as compared to the Broadway version...although just about anything is better than the horror that was Aaron Carter in the show...Confused But I still find the show highly enjoyable and a lot of fun, Gertrude McFuzz remains my all-time dream role to this day.

zoomer15

Last year my h igh school did Seussical. I was a Wickersham Brother. At first I was really skeptical about it. I didn't really like it a whole lot but I began to like it more and more as it went on! It is jsut a whole lot of fun and the songs are catchy and cute! The story line is kinda strange but its fun at the same time! It wasn't one of the best liked productions by the audience that our shcool has done but I think it was a good show.
Guest

Seussical Moment:

We did this show in the fall and during Chasing the Whos(I think thats it but I can't remeber. The song where Vlad takes the clover and drops it into a big patch) Vlad ran all around the theater and Horton chased him and when they say "he dropped it" Vlad throws it and a huge bag full of clovers dops onto stage.....except they pulled the string for the bag to open and it never did...

So the next song was Notice me Horton and the whole point of the song is to be looking through a big patch of clovers to find the whos, excpet there was one clover on stage. It eventually fell in the middle of the song almost on top of gertrude, she dove to avoid it.

I LOOOOOOVE this show! I don't understand why it dosen't have it's own fourm. Does anyone want to do virtual auditions for this show?
broadwaybaby246

yes yes yes yes yes! i want to audition for gertrude... just tell me when
mizzie

A friends high school did thise show once. I didn't get to go see it (she lives in T.O.), but they did get on Breakfast Television. I got to see parts of Notice Me Horton and Oh, The Thinks You Can Think. I wish I lived in Toronto so I could have gone to see it!

Still, I really loved the songs they did, and I'm interested in getting a recording of the show. Which one is the best?

Well, I bought the OBC and I must say - it is a very fun show! There are no barriers in it's use of style, and the lyrics are interesting to read. It's a truly enjoyable show!
BroadwayBud

I'd be a part of the virtual cast! Very Happy
Mr_X

I'd join a virtual Seussical cast in a heartbeat.

I assistant directed a production of it with kids from ages 7-14, and I gotta say this was the most fun I have had in a while. We had near-perfect casting, and we made the middle-age kids (10-12) be jungle animals, while the little ones were Who's. Our set was only 5 ladders, and we strung vines between them for the jungle, but that made the audience elaborate more on imagination. "Alone in the Universe", "Solla Sollew", and "Notice Me, Horton" were my favorites. We did "A Day For the Cat in the Hat" with Thing 1 and Thing 2. Our cat was very, very good with doing all his impressions and being spasmodic. We cut a chunk of "Monkey Around" because we had 5 Wickershams and they weren't all fabulous singers. It turned out to be one of the best shows they've ever done, and Seussical will always have a place in my heart.
Guest

Hey! I was just about to ask if "Seussical" would be a good choice for a summer camp production with 7-14 year olds. I was looking to see if there was a junior version of it. Did you use a junior version?
Mr_X

We ordered it from Music Theatre International, but I don't think there's a junior version of Seussical. It differs from the OBC recording with many different lyrics, different melodies sometimes, and the complete elimination of "A Day For the Cat in the Hat", though we put it back in.
siruno1

i'm auditioning for seussical on the 28! i'm auditioning for horton, & i'm singing 'every story is a love story' from aida.

I hate when MTI does things like that. They license some weird version of a musical and telly you that you can't change it. Know, I haven't seen Seussical (or heard the OBCR or seen a copy of the libretto that they license) so I don't know much on the subject, but perhaps it was changed on the cast recording. They do that sometimes for recording purposes--change lines and all.

MTI / Seussical

Well, I don't think MTI decides what versions of any show are available for production; that's up to the the authors or their estates and MTI works as a representative on their behalf.

As far as Seussical is concerned, the version available for production is based on rewrites made for the tours that followed the Broadway production, which is why the OBC recording and the licensed version of the production don't match up.

hmm...

if you guys could compare each lead seussical part with today's singers(the ones on the radio), who would you put who with who?

Oh, I thought it was a test on MTI's part.
Theatrelife101

Oh I Love Seussical!!!! Very Happy I was in the production last year. I was a bird girl. The show turned out really good! (we had an AMAZING cat in the hat!)

One funny thing I remember was when the cat goes on stage to be the "latin pool boy" he had to change REALLY QUICK!!!! so, he would just run back stage (he had his swimshorts on underneath his suit... he put them on in intermission) and 3-4 of us girls would strip him down and hand him his props etc... we had our little jokes with having our own personal stripper etc lol.
Guest

Are there two versions of Seussical. I just saw a Seussical performance last night and the Army part was cut completely as well as Cat in the Hat, and most of the reprises of "Tell Yourself How Lucky You Are." It was a children's theatre- I am wondering if they cut the extraneous parts- or if they were able to purchase a shorter script from MTI so that it would flow more naturally.
Annaliese

Sorry forgot to sign in!
Annaliese

I actually found out the answer to my own question. I was looking in the program and it said that it was the One Act version of Seussical designed for Young Audiences. I just find it odd that MTI doesn't specify on their website that there are two versions to order. Hmmm

I just found out that last year the summer camp did the musical version of "The Jungle Book." Do you think that "Seussical" would be too similar? I really want to do it! I just don't want the kids to be like "Another show about animals!" Then again, the camp is not just a theatre camp- its got so many other things, that you don't normally get the same kids doing theatre year after year.
siruno1

dr. dake?

does any one know how to pronounce those words that dr. dake says replying to gertrudes request for a medication to make her tale grow?

it's something like "tut tut sucked de doocter...."

does anyone know what he says after that?
zoomer15

CAT (as Doctor Dake)
"Tut tut!", said the Doctor.
Such talk! It's too absurd!
Your little tail is just right
For your kind of bird!

(NOTE: The CAT may use German, pig Latin,
Unintelligible gibberish or anything else that's funny in order to say the above.
However, if anything but plain English is used for the above,
Then please add the following lines in parenthesis to provide a "translation")
siruno1

ooh. yeah it says that in my call back script. i wanted to know the exact pronunciations the cat said in the OBC cd, because i was thinking about using what he said in my auditions, unless any of you had other ideas.
Christine_Colgate

I love the show.. i was mayzie. and it rocked i was also the choreographer. but anyway. the people doing costumes were not nice. (my mom was one fo them) i had to wear this hat that kinda reminded em of a hat from my fair lady. but anywya it was like covered in black mesh and i swear i looked like a 70"s pimp ganster. and the girl who was gertrude got an awesome costume she looked like alice in wonderland.. bt yeah apparently my friend that came to see it said i was hysterical.. everytime i came out.. he laughed. which is a good thing. haahha I also slipped on my tail (which was a bright pink boa) and fell on the ground.
kitkatchicka101

i'm doing seussical this summer, i'm in the advanced chorus. i think it'll be a very good show for little kids, because if my counting is correct, someone in the general chorus will be in 6 or 7 songs (i think i'll be in 12 or 13).
siruno1

i just found out today that i am casted as the cat!!

Ohh IM so jealous! The cat would be SO fun!!! Good luck with that! And jsut have fun with it!

i love seussical...never seen it, but i loved the music.

but i think u have to be familiar with how dr. seuss is and understand it- otherwise it is lost on the audience- obviously

I am currently playing Mr. Mayor in Seussical. This is my first year of acting and I swear I was ssssssssooooo close to getting Horton!! Grr oh well.
Miss McFuzz

My Dream Role is Gertrude McFuzz! If you couldn't guess from my profile name! I played her last year! Seussical is a very fun show with some good music! I LOVE IT. Actually... The audiences on broadway loved Seussical they just ate up all the cute characters. It just did bad with the big guys. My favorite show I have been in by far!
Psy4Potato

I was in the show last summer. I played a Wickersham bro. I had so much fun, I love the show. I would love to be in it again. (this is my first post on here since it got remodeled. Don't know if I spelled that right lol)
Pubgirl

Ok maybe you guys can help me out.

My theatre co. are considering Seussical and I've never seen it.

You can see the roles I am used to playing below so any ideas what I'm suited for.

I'm 26, Mezzo, Belter, Very strong Dancer (not sure if that matters in this show) Blonde, and usually go for more comedic roles. However had a blast playing Peggy in 42nd St and Penny in Honk so I'm not restricted to comedy.

If you could give me an idea of female characters I'd really appreciate it.
Xzain

Yay! Suessical!

Anyway, Pubgirl, sounds like you'd be great for either Mayzie la Bird (flashy character), or even Gertrude McFuzz if you've got a good high A (I think it's a high A) she slides up to at the end of "Amazing Gertrude!". There's also the Sour Kangaroo (smaller part) or one of the bird girls, which are on for like 3/4 of the play. Or Mrs. Mayor, I guess, although I've never seen her sung belted.

My high school did Suessical for our first school musical and we did very well, netting $5,000 total (not bad for a backwater charter-school theatre co.). It was due to all the happy characters! And we had an AMAZING Jojo! (I played the Cat, btw, and it's the most fun I've had on stage ever!) Very Happy
le_moofin

I'm auditioning for Gertrude May 12 for the Seussical production in my city... since I'm a soprano (can comfortably hit a high B if I've warmed up properly) and I've had a bit of acting experience, I'd love to play her. However, since I'm only 15 and this is a theater group open to anyone, I'm expecting a small part. Although I think it'd be fun to be one of The Bird Girls XD I know Gertrude's supposed to be awkward and such... and when I'm not dancing, I usually am quite clumsy. Wish me luck, I guess ^_^
broadwaybaby578

I'm planning on auditioning for this show in a couple of weeks. I'd love to be Gertrude. I think I'm going to sing "There's a Fine Fine Line" for the audition. Do you think that is a good choice?

Also, I was wondering if Gertrude has to be played by someone thin. While I'm not really heavy, I am definatey solid. I am also very short, if that makes a difference.
bell

Pubgirl-
in my opinion, yiu shud go for mayzie, but if you dont want 2, theres also gertrude, mrs.mayor, sour kangaroo, and the bird gals!
happyguava

I finished playing in the pit for a commnity theatre group doing this show about 2 months ago. I had never seen it beforehand, and I can almost recite the whole thing now (as you can imagine - I sat through it about 15 times!). It is such a great show!!! I really want to be in in it now, I had no idea how much fun it was!
katieanne

i've got interviews coming up at two different theatres that are doing seussical. i'd love to choreograph this musical, it just seems like it would be a blast to do.

I don't think so, there is a girl on You tube called jackie pock, who does an amazing Gertrude, who is not stick thin.

My theatre Company are doing Seussical next year, I am determind to do my darn best to get Gertrude, I am MORE than vocally capable (I can, on a good day get an E on the top of the staff in my chest voice)

Oh and on the OBC Gertrude hits a High D which is phenomanal. But none of the other Gertrudes I have heard have ever hit it.

Cake_in_Song

I was the Pillberry Bush last summer. It's not technically a scripted character, but the director wanted to personify the bush. I wore this huge hat with silk leaves all over it, and milked the part for all it was worth.

Hello all! I must say, I love Seussical! My mum's directing it next year, so I'll be auditioning for Gertrude. Cool

i was a citizen of who in seussical and it was so much fun..honestly its the best kids show around..
it was funny..in ours gertrude forgot to bring out the clover at the end of "all for you" =)

favorite song? most definately notice me horton

Cool Totally Notice Me, Horton! Laughing That's funny that she forgot the clover.

Whoa, actually, I've seen it done at a lot of places where Gertrude is overweight. I actually was thinking that maybe I COULDN'T be Gertrude for this reason...I'm tall and skinny! At least that's how they cast it last time; who knows, maybe they'll change it.

Tall and skinny? I'm they same way. Very tall for my age too. But if you look at Janine LaManna, who originally played Gertrude, she is very thin. Not to sure about her height though...

But I do agree that Gertrude can be of many sizes.

I don't know what this Gertrude will be like, but I'm going to see Seussical in two days! I'll be sure to let you guys know about it.
Rumpelteazer2006

OK, so I want Gertrude!

So I'm auditioning in two weeks for Seussical, and I reeeally want a shot at Gertrude. The songs really suit my voice (I've been told I sound a bit like Kerry Butler, so the character roles are great for me), and since I'm really tall, I have the comic/awkward thing down. However, the last time this particular company did this show 2 years ago, their Gertrude was quite heavy, and I have a feeling they want to cast it the same way this year. I really want a chance to get to the callbacks for it, though, and show them that I could do well at the part, so I need to pick a song that will get me noticed even though I'm not what they're probably picturing for the part. What songs would you guys suggest for the audition that will remind them of Gertrude? Right now I'm considering two, "I'm Not" from "Little By Little," or "Shy" from "Once Upon a Mattress." Any advice or suggestions?

holy crap. I wish I sounded like Kerry Butler.
Rumpelteazer2006

Guess what?!? I got called back for Mayzie and Mrs. Mayor (how different can you get?) I have like 6 pieces of music to learn for it, so this should be a fun weekend. It's pretty much the beginning and ends of Amayzing Mayzie and Mayzie in Palm Beach, plus all Mrs. Mayor's harmonies. No Gertrude this time, but it makes it easier to focus on trying for Mayzie.

The dancing wasn't too hard, mostly a lot of "shakin it" and latin salsa type stuff, plus some Who-type stuff...fun!

Callbacks are Tuesday...wish me luck!
bustopher_burger

we have been working on our production for the past month or so, and it's turning out quite well. It's hard being schmitz, and the male understudy for both cat and horton.
Rumpelteazer2006

Oh my gosh!!! I just got cast as Mayzie LaBird! Yaaaaayyyy! I'm so psyched. It's gonna be a BLAST! Very Happy

I did it two years ago and loved every minute of it! I was Mrs. Mayor and it was such a cool part! One of my favorite ( and most hated) memories is of the Circus Magurkus scene. We had really cool costumes, we rented them from a local theater who had done it recently, but the circus costumes took the cake. I was one of the animals for that scene, and I was strapped into what basically amounted to pink, furry footie pajamas with giant, green santa belly, a matching furry hood with huge ears and pink furry mittens. It was sooooo hot because I had to wear long sleeves underneath because of a quick change after the scene back into Mrs. Mayor for Solla Sollew. It was really kinda cute, but really annoying at the same time!

OMG!!! I just found out what I got in Seussical!!!

.......I'M GERTRUDE MCFUZZ! I started crying when I found out! I'm just so happy!

And there are 92 people in this cast!!! (It's not double-casted)

Awesome! I am currently Gertrude in our school's production of Seussical! I am so very excited!

I played the Sour Kangaroo when my HS did it a few years ago.

There were a few things I hated... like she had me in the middle of the stage during Chasing The Whos dancing with the Bird Girls... who are on the edges of the stage leading up the aisles. And the scene was going on behind me while I was dancing alone in the middle of the stage... looks weird on the video I DONT have a copy of... heh heh.

Ahh Sour Kangaroo is like my dream role!!

BTW, I just read an article on it - it's not set to come out until March 2008. Don't get too excited just yet! Shocked

I was just cast as Mayzie in Seussical Jr. Does anybody know what parts were cut out of the junior version?

thanks!
electramcm

I don't think any of Mayzie's parts are cut out in Seussical jr. I'm in the junior version too. They cut out like half of All For You!

I'm auditioning for Seussical in a few months, and probably for Gertrude or a Bird Girl. Any audition song suggestions I've seen are slower, and the company requested an up-tempo song. Any other suggestions? Thanks Smile
