Re: Send in the Clowns
It's a tie between Dench and Johns. They both bring so much character to the song, you can clearly hear they get it. |

I agree, as usual, with the brilliant Dvarg (which makes me brilliant by association!)
Obviously, he voted for one of the grand dames, and I voted for the other... |

Krusty the Clown's version is best. | ||

Just what I was thinking. |

Come on... And, yes, Krusty's verson rocks too! I also like the version where Sondheim duets with ALW (as well as Sondheims own version of the Sondheim Sings album). |

I missed Jean Simmons - she was my favourite before Judi Dench's version came along and blew all the others out the water.
Barbra Streisand sings at her self-indulgent best - the new verse is just over-egging the pudding. Judy Collins is a charming concert version - tho' I prefer Francis Albert, if I'm going to listen to that style or Grace Jones lol Sally Anne Howes is over-sung and she's not very convincing in the part. Angela Lansbury's is fine for what it is but it's caught half-way between a concert and performance Glen Close ditto for this and Ms Close has all the charisma of a wet weekend in Bradford. Glynis Johns is affecting but just doesn't have the emotional punch that Dench or Simmons (or indeed Dorothy Tutin) gave it - the reaction is a sigh rather than heartbreak. |
