Seeing Wicked tonightI finally get to see Wicked tonight so...I just thought I'd brag about it. I've listened to the soundtrack (and loved it) countless times but now I'm actually going to understand what's going on! Maybe...I'm sitting in the very last row so I might not be able to see or hear.

...but there is an Original Broadway Cast Recording.
Maybe you should put some more options on the poll besides "I love it."

Yes, I know....people keep telling me that. I'm just so used to saying soundtrack all the time. But you know what I mean, so it doesn't matter much.

...I can't figure out how to change the poll.
The show was amazing by the way. I'll write more about it tomorrow....my head hurts since earlier today I passed out, hit my head, and almost had to miss the show to go to the hospital.

That's a good question. I don't know...I'm happy because I really liked Wicked and finally got to see it. But then again my head is killing me which makes me unhappy.

I meant no offense to musicals, theatre, cast recordings, soundtracks, or whatever when I said that. I do care about the proper terms, but the reality is that it really shouldn't be that big of a deal if I made a mistake as long as I meant well, and someone already pointed it out.

Is there some inside joke that I'm not getting?
....
Okay, here's what I thought of the show. Hmmm...What to say? Or more appropriately...what isn't there to say? I laughed, I cried, I experienced the second greatest thing I have ever seen on a stage in my life. Let's start with the cast...
I thought I wasn't going to like this cast as much as the original cast....well, I was very wrong! Julia Murney was an AMAZING Elphaba. Amazing I tell you!!! And Kendra Kassebaum was excellent in the role of Glinda. She fit the role of 'ditzy blonde' perfectly. Jennifer Waldman as Nessarose was outstanding as well. You could really sympathize with her during "The Wicked Witch of the East". Kirk McDonald was annoying, as I imagine Boq should be. The guy who played Fiyero was okay, but not particularly great. I found out afterwards that it was an understudy and not Sebastian Arcelus. P.J. Benjamin was 'wonderful' as the Wizard as was Alma Cuervo who played Madame Morrible. They were good at acting nice one minute then being evil the next. The chorus was good, it was just a little hard to tell what they were saying when they all sing at once. But then I guess that's how most live musicals are.
The songs that I thought they performed the best were: "No One Mourns the Wicked", "The Wizard and I", "What Is This Feeling?", "I'm Not That Girl", "A Sentimental Man", "Defying Gravity", "The Wicked Witch of the East", "No Good Deed", "For Good", and "Finale". Wait...that's most of the songs. Oh well, I guess that just shows they did a really good job!
The set was awesome, of course. I like how at the beginning after someone asks if Glinda was Elphaba's friend, random schoolpeople run in and freeze in a spotlight, and then Glinda seems startled by them and the way she says "But you must understand, it was a long time ago!" It's like she was trying not to remember or something. The way they did the whole flying monkeys thing was cool too.
**SPOILERS AHEAD**
At the end, when they find out that the Wizard is Elphaba's father, they replay that part when he sings, "Have another drink my dark eyed beauty...". Well, they played it from the very side of the theatre and it was so loud and echoey and random, it caught everyone off guard. That was by far the creepiest moment of the performance. (Think Phantom of the Opera--the movie-- when the Phantom interrupts the performance to say, "Did I not instruct?...etc" and his voice echoes off the ceiling.)
One thing I didn't like about the finale was when the women in the chorus start singing "And goodness knows the wicked's lives are lonely..." as the curtain was being pulled across the stage. If they're going to do that, it shouldn't be so loud and crisp. It would have been better if it was the whole chorus singing it, and it sounds like the voices are distant, offstage and coming closer.
**END SPOILERS**
WOW, and I'm not even done. I'm going to take a break...more when I return. Actually I think I'll just read my Grimmerie (<3), get some sleep, and write the rest in the morning.

First off, I'm glad you really liked the show. I can't wait to see it in November.
Secondly, no that wasn't an inside joke. It was sort of elaborating on what TVAW said. You see your original comment was ...
| Quote: | | I've yet to meet someone who doesn't love it, but okay. |
And TVAW responded...
| Quote: | | Hi, I'm TVAW! How are you tonight? |
So since you've met TVAW you can't say anymore that you have yet to meet sombody who didn't love the show. (Because she didn't, and you've met her )
Is that confusing :S

I went to the matinee (with tickets so hard to get, that offered me the best seats) so I had the standby Elphaba, Victoria Matlock (who was good), and the understudy Glinda, Annaleigh Ashford (who I thought was very good). Is Elphaba so difficult that she has a standby and understudy while Glinda has only an understudy?
| Quote: | | Jennifer Waldman as Nessarose was outstanding as well. You could really sympathize with her during "The Wicked Witch of the East". |
Yeah, she was good but it's not a very big part so not a lot to work with. | Quote: | | Kirk McDonald was annoying, as I imagine Boq should be. |
Yeah, he did fine.
| Quote: | | The guy who played Fiyero was okay, but not particularly great. I found out afterwards that it was an understudy and not Sebastian Arcelus. |
We had Sebastian, he did ok, but Fiyero seems to me to be a very uninteresting role. More of a straightman to Glinda and Elphaba.
| Quote: | | P.J. Benjamin was 'wonderful' as the Wizard as was Alma Cuervo who played Madame Morrible. They were good at acting nice one minute then being evil the next. |
I thought Morrible's role was more interesting for an actor than the Wizard's.

I saw a clip of the beginning of Wicked with Chenoweth and it seems as if they've changed the dialog a little. That bit you mentioned seems to have been added since it first started on Broadway. Originally, the question of if the Wicked Witch of the West is dead is what stops Glinda and then she descends. In the show I saw, I got the impression that Glinda was going to sail away but when someone asks her if she was friends with the Wicked Witch of the West, Glinda stops moving, looks up, holds her hand up, and curls her fingers slightly, and with a slight wave motion, indicates (to something above) that she wants to descend (a really funny moment).
One other thing I saw that was slightly different, but better. When Elphaba asks Glinda "Feel better now?". Ashford turns to the audience and with bright smile on her face says "Yes I do!". In all the other versions I've seen (video clips) Glinda keeps looking at Elphaba but says her line more menacingly.

I guess so. Sometimes I'm more of a Galinda than an Elphaba in terms of intelligence.

|
Fiyero, Raoul, Marius....there are too many of these on Broadway! But then again they're always necessary for the plot.

Yeah that part got a big laugh.
Some other funny parts that I liked...
Glinda: "And what exactly have you been doing besides riding around on that filthy, old thing?"
Elphaba: "Well, we can't all come and go by bubble."
Galinda (talking about Fiyero): "He's distant, and moodified, and he's been thinking, which really worries me."
Galinda: "Oh look, it's...tomorrow!" *glittering finger motions*
As much as I like the jokes, there were some times when they just got in the way. When we're supposed to be feeling sorry for one of the characters it instead turns into a laughing moment.
Something that confused me...there was a picture in the souvenir program of a gigantic inflatable witch hat during one of the songs, and yet there wasn't one in the performance. Is that another thing they stopped doing?

You saw it on tour right? I don't think they do it on the tour. It's at the VERY VERY beginning of No One Mourns the Wicked, the chorus kinda comes out of it to begin the dancing etc.

Wicked is an interesting idea but I wish the score was stronger and the book was better. I'll have to read the novel but I didn't like how the show messes with The Wizard of Oz and I especially didn't like the ending. That was blasphemy!

I'm glad you noticed it too because I saw the tour and couldn't remember it either. It shouldn't have been too hard to include it as well because it folds up rapidly on stage so it couldn't take up too much space to transport.

It's not included because the hat disappears through a trapdoor on Broadway, and many locations on the tour don't have a trapdoor built into the stage.

(Spoliers ahead...)
I thought the ending was okay but didn't really fit somehow. The music in the Finale is sad but the ending itself isn't. How can we be thinking, "Oh poor Elphaba, they killed her even though she wasn't wicked," if she's still alive? I don't have anything against Elphaba but I think it would have been a better ending if she died. We'd actually still feel bad for Elphaba rather than Glinda who now thinks her best friends are dead. Unless that's what happened in the book....DON'T tell me how the book ends. I haven't read it yet.

If that is the case then that seems to present difficulties to the ending of the show. Where does Elphaba go and return if the stage has no trap door?

They roll on a flat laying on the ground with a trapdoor on it and a well. Elphaba is hiding behind the well. Fiyero opens the trapdoor, which lifts towards the audience, and Elphaba ducks under it and pops up. It's kind of hard to explain, but it was done very, very well.
