Schwartz's "The Baker's Wife"

Hi there,
We have auditions coming up for a uni production of Stephen Schwartz's "The Baker's Wife" and I'm finding it hard to find a good audition song. This is partly because I don't know very much about the musical at all. From what it sounds like, though, I think I'll be going for the part of Denise, but I don't know if that helps. I'm a mezzo and more of a character actress.

If anyone could shed any light at all, I'd be so grateful!

Thanks heaps! Very Happy

This is SUCH a great show and Denise is a fab part. It sounds like she'd be perfect for you as a mezzo/character actor. She opens the show with 'Chanson' (how's your French?) and, I feel, she is the centre of the community, as the cafe owner's wife and the one who truly 'wears the pants' in the relationship. 'Chanson' is quite lyrical and reflective on life and its purpose, so maybe a song along those lines.... afraid that most of the shows I audition for require a piece from the show (maybe this is a UK AmDram trait!) so I'm a bit useless with song suggestions per se.

Good luck.
