School show?

So we were planning on doing Little Shop of Sorrors, but we can't find a decently priced plant anywhere so we need to find a new show. But our stage is also having problems our fly system doesn't work correctly, I don't know the details I just know we would only be able to have one back drop and we wouldn't be able to fly things in and out. what I am asking is what shows are there that use hardly or none at all of the fly system and are good for high schools?

Aida or High School Musical, perhaps? Smile

Little shop doesn't really need a fly system. That's why my school did it last year.

You could try The Fantasticks... or something. Honestly, pick the show based on the talent at your school. ANY musical can be done minimally without flying things in and out.

Not High School Musical.

Take my advice. It will save lives.

Once On This Island or Godspell can be done not using the fly at all.
music is my life!!!

you could get a cheap audrey ii off ebay or something...

We have no fly space. We are in a gym on the stage attached at one end. We've done...

Joseph
Wizard of Oz
You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown
Bye Bye Birdie
Brigadoon
Godspell
The Apple Tree

...in the last seven years. Not to mention
Our Town
Cheaper by the Dozen
May the Farce Be With You
Who Bumped Off Barnaby
The Crucible
Charlotte's Web
Steel Magnolias

You don't need fly space to put on good shows. You need good acting, good directing, and believable settings and costumes.

I work in a professional theatre which has no flying system whatsoever, plus virtually no wingspace. This year's musical is The Producers and in the past we've done Guys and Dolls, Rocky Horror Show, Oliver!, South Pacific, My Fair Lady, Cabaret, Kiss Me Kate, The Sound of Music, Big River to mention a few, plus a lot of straight plays (seven a year....). You don't need a flying system, you just need to work your set designs around not having the capability to fly. Think swinging flats which are one thing on one side, one on another, and using furniture to establish places. West Side Story is one that's quite easy to work with no flys - you can do fantastic things with scaffolding (but for goodness sake, get professionals in to do the scaffing) and just have a New York background behind it and it can work brilliantly. It's difficult to sing though. I'd recommend Big River - it's a fantastic show that's not performed enough, not hugely difficult to sing and has the option of having loads of cast members.

Robin, was Steel Magnolias a high school production? We're looking to maybe do it at my school. Did it go over well?

Also, how is the sound in the gym? We discussed possibly doing a show in ours, but we were afraid that the sound would just echo everywhere and make a big mess.

If you haven't got any fly space or a big budget, don't do a fantasy like Beauty and the Beast or The Wizard of Oz, they require a decent budget, but they can still be pulled off.

We have been trying to reach a guy for his plant and he finally called yesterday and we sent a check in the mail so now we are doing Little Shop of Horrors now. Thanks for your suggestions though!

Be sure to post pictures of the show!

I sure will, but it won't be until fall.
