school production HELPso. my school is considering not putting on a production this year, and my friends and i WILL DIE WITHOUT ONE. the two suggestios being tossed around are grease and the wizard of oz, but we are looking to suggest a few more as a local production is putting on the wizard of oz this year and grease next year.as a public australian school on a budget and without much outstanding talent, we need easy to stage musicals i guess but fun and well known (ish) with a large but exciting ensemble and easy to medium principal roles. oh, another thing. if they stage wizard of oz i am likely to get dorothy, which is completely fine with me, but if they choose grease, i will get cast as sandy, simply because there is no-one else to sing or act it and i dont want that role coz its boring, so more suggestions would be great. thanks, laura |

hmm i know you said there's not much outstanding talent, but do you have a lot of a particular style of performers...such as tap dancers or jazz singers? this might help.
p.s. i don't think sandy is boring at all i had fun playing sandy! |

i mean hardly any talent. we have quite a number of jazz/tap dancers but they are not outstanding. the singing aspect of our school is crap, with lterally about 5 people in the whole school worth listening to. and when a fourteen year old (me) is better than a year 12 studying VCE (year 12) music performance. there is cause for concern.
also, if there are any links or google keywords you suggest i search that would be much appreciated. i am looking for price, songlist, synopsis and licensing agreements. thanks for your help, laura PS: i havent played sandy before so i guess i cant really comment but from my experience from musical theatre i am usually stuck with the 'straight' and 'non-comic' roles, bar the cat in honk and although i could pull off the role really well, i think rizzo or frenchie or even marty would be more fu and out of my ourdinary role choice or casting. |

What about Hello Dolly or Cinderella? Less songs, many female roles, simple shows. | ||||

As I really don't know enough shows to give a recommendation, I can say that MTI's show selector may be just what you need. You can search by size, difficulty, appropiateness, and other things, the only drawback is that it searches only MTI shows so R&H and the like aren't there. |

how about sweet charity?
i did it a while ago and was in the chorus. There's basically one female lead who has two friends. All 3 are best if they're really good dancers. Then there's the girls in the fandango ballroom. When we did this, i was too young for any of these parts because of "content" (i was 13 amd the girls were about 16/17) but the one role i went for was Rosie. THis is great if you have one girl who is sorta new to shows and looks 15. those are basically all the singing female parts but there's loadsa cameo parts. There's also loads of guy's pars but i'm not really sure of the ranges, only that we had an 11yr old for Daddy Brubeck (cuz he was tiny) and Oscar (the male lead) goes up quite high. THe chorus can be any size but we had about 60. the parts can be really high (like part E in Rhythm of Life) and really low (part D, Rhythm) but there are plenty of dance opputunities. It's a really fun show to do, with only one really fast change for the chorus in act 2 and is good if you only have a few really good performers. x x x |

Little shop is good for a limited cast too. There's basically 2 leads, a boy and a girl. THen htere's the plant (Audrey2) and Muschnik and Ronnette,Chiffon and Crystal. At school, it was done a few years ago with a fairly small chorus and good for an emsemble cast. it takes up loads of space for the performance but it's really impressive if it's done well. also not the hardest songs to sing but very good. |

Footloose. Definitely.
It's kind of a junkie script (kind of...? gaaaah), but it's lots of fun, the audience will love it and it's super easy to do with low talent. Honestly, as long as your Ariel, Ren and Shaw can sing (and your Chuck/Willard/Rusty can be confident) and you've got a couple of solid chorus boys and girls to prance around and look pretty, you can do the show. |
