Sarah Brown: Character Discussion

Hi Everyone:

As you probably know, I'm going to be playing Sarah soon and I'm loving it. But I'm having trouble with the character, so do any former Sarahs have any tips on what I can do to make her a bit different and interesting and not just the typical stereotypical ingenue character?

Please help, it's my first lead and I really want the audience to like me!

Please, someone reply!! Sad
Salome

sarah is far from a typical ingenue..she is hard, cold and narrow minded when the show starts.instead of seeing sinners as people she sees them at undesirables whoms she needs to convert and reform. not until she meets sky does this change..she sees not only how a "sinner" can be a human being but she discovers her own sexual desires and carnal instints toward men..and it scares her to death.

i wouldnt say she's cold hearted or narrow minded
she really just wants to help people
she sees the sinners as in need of her help and is frustrated by the fact that none of them want help and want to face their sins and join god
she has a heart of gold but it is clouded by fear and despair
her mission is dying and she knows it even before General Cartwright shows up
she is worried, there is a slight desperation there underneath
Arvide I always thought of as her sensible grounding that keeps Sarah from going absolutely nuts
she is very focused and driven though in spite of all that

Sky is really the key to her realization that there is so much more to life than god and church and maybe sometimes its alright to break a few rules
And she is afraid of this at first because she's never experienced this before
Her life previous has been very straight and narrow, black and white, none of these emotions or impulses

I think really in the end all the characters come to a sort of realization that a little change isnt all bad
Salome

there are lines that her grandfater says that indicates that yes while she want to help people she sees them more as clay to be molded into devout people that actual human beings.

It's easy to make sarah a snotty, "better than you" attitude which is not her character at all. She truly wants to help sinners. She sees it as a pure soul trying to help a black hole of a sinner. It's hard to do, but you have to keep her sweet and dedicated in her struggle to keep the glory of god alive in gamblers

Being "sweet" is a boring choice, IMO. No offense, but I really like Salome's points above.

I don't think she's snotty at all...I think Salome is saying that Sarah sees the world in black and white. She's very calculated and matter-of-fact. She doesn't see in shades of grey until Sky comes into her life.

And while she does care, it almost seems as if she takes a more scientific approach to helping. (If you do this right, this will happen...)

And obviously, there's a lot of restraint in her actions and emotions. She means well, but to say she's "sweet" kinda weakens her character.

Also, the actor is forced to ask themself what they are protecting themselves from in being so restrained. How did they come to be that way?

Thanks guys, that's helped me a lot. I'm finding it easier to play the part now.

Two weeks to go, I'm so nervous.
