Sarah Brightman acting skillsMy drama teacher said I reminded her of Sarah Brightman and I am the male version of her. I don't she meant it as an insult because I get good roles in musicals and she's the one who cast them, but everywhere I go they say that she is a terrible actress. Can anyone please describe her acting style and how good or bad she really is? Any videoclips of her acting will be appreciated. Thanks for everyone who could help. |

Her singing voice in the OLCR of Phantom in my opinion's terrible. But that's just me ;D
Some people really like her, though. It's all relative. |

Yowch... I would not hold as the torch of talent... but is your drama teacher an uber-phan? That would make it a major compliment!

There are people who think she is great.... but, even if you don't think she's great, take it as a compliment!

I like her but I only have the CD w/ her and Michael, but she's ok. I think sometimes the vibrato is WAY to much (cat screeching) but I still like her because she doesn't screech on the top notes, and it's controlled. (unlike others |

"Sarah Brightman" and "acting skills" go together as well as "Jack Noseworthy" and "Broadway hit."

I think Sarah Brightman's voice is ok. I didn't particularly like her in Phantom, as for her acting skills, as I have seen clips of her in other things, which I thought she was alot better in, perse, Song and Dance. But we do have to take into effect that ALW wrote the music for Phantom especially for her, as she was his wife at the time, or soon to he.

The World's Best-Selling Soprano Does Not Suck
Her acting Phantom left a bit to be desired, and so did her singing, but have you ever heard her singing other things? I think her acting in Repo was fantastic as well. For everyone who doesn't like Sarah in Phantom: Fleurs Du Mal and Symphony Free Time to Say Goodbye I think she sounds much better now. Acting in Repo: Link I'll stop before I really get going... |

The atmosphere was hostile because ALW had forced through that she would be the principal Christine on Broadway - or else he would not open POTO there. The quarrel wasn't whether she was talented enough, but whether she was famous enough to justify a Brit taking the part which an American actress should have had. ALW quarreled and negotiated with American Equity for a long time about it, until they landed on the deal that he got to star Brightman on Broadway, as long as he choose an American for a lead role in one of his musicals in West End later on. This pretty much made Sarah Brightman a scapegoat, and she was judged before people had even seen her in the role. Her Broadway alternate Patti Cohenour was lovely, sure, as was West End alternate Claire Moore. But I think people were as unaware of their stage talent/effort as they were with Brightman's - it was more a matter of principle. Sarah Brightman WASN'T the best, acting wise. But she still had a stage presence and voice that made her a mezmerising experience. What was special about the role of Christine was that it was shaped around her stage abilities, and the role was written for her with love and in love. It adapted to her range which was both very high and very low, and with a pure and interesting timbre. Christine was after all to represent "a new sound" within the world of opera, opposed to the traditional coloraturas and power sopranos. It enabled her to show off dance skills in "Hannibal" and "Masquerade" - remember that Brightman danced the whole Hannibal scene with the slave girls, opposed to the "running in at the end" version Christines do today. Some modern Christines also run off stage in the middle of "Masquerade", instead of dancing with the corps the ballet. Brightman danced it all. And she did have some fine acting moments, with lots of charm, and with an innocence and vulnerability that I think far surpassed what Emmy Rossum managed to in the 2004 movie (reason why I mention her, is that they both suffer from the "starry eyed acting syndrome", which I don't find appealing in neither of them). I think it lacked some depth and spine in her Christine, but she isn't the first and won't be the last. And I think the total of what she brought into the role makes her a good Christine, despite her tendency to go for the "starry eyed acting". Two clips: DANCING IN HANNIBAL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ec61E1t-r5M (Brightman is the "lead dancer" in front, along with Meg) ANGEL OF MUSIC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j72pnfSATFQ (I think she does these scenes better than many other Christines) Being compared to Sarah Brightman by one's acting teacher... Well... It might be the total the teacher is thinking of, the overall impression you give. Or it might be her more recent acting effort (which is, in my opinion, a lot stronger). |
