Same song, same directorWould it be advisable to try out for a specific director with a song that said director has already heard you sing?

I'm guessing he would probably want to hear something different from you suited to the character you are going for.

You should sing a different song so he can see that you can play different characters. you don't want him to think you're a "one trick pony"

I always try to sing something different each time. I think it's neat if you can surprise someone you've worked with previously, and if you keep singing the same thing...yeah, that's not too likely.

Prepare something different, but take the sheet music / backing track to your originally song along as well, just in case.
Always prepare a ballad, a character and an uptempo song for an audition, as well as what you've been asked to sing. And even though it shouldn't be an original choice, prepare a piece from the show as well, just in case.

This is good advice, but I'm curious: 'just in case' what happens?

Well, you never know at auditions. Maybe in the original song there's a certain note or emotion that the director would like to see you hit / portray again? Or, maybe someone else sung that at the first round and they wanna see who does it better? You never know.
