Rumour - Rights being withheld from amateur groups

By all accounts a few societies here in the UK have asked for the rights to do Chess and they have been witheld due to a forthcoming professional production for 2007.

This is total heresay but I'm really hopeful that something is finally going to happen.

Fingers crossed.

I can't speak to the UK issue, but our (midwestern US) amateur company has been granted the rights to perform the show in late March 2007. We've already been sent the perusal copy of the libretto.

I very much doubt this as I have just seen a production at the "kenneth more theatre" in ilford on 18/11/06 by the "ilford operatic and dramatic society".

Chess is rumored to be coming back to the stage considerably more often than it actually does. I think it's a wait and see game.

Well I live in hope. It may be that someone is trying to get it off the ground which is enough to stop the rights being given for the time of year that they want to run it professionally but whether it happens or not I don't know.

According to Tim's Bio in the Program of the National Touring Cast of "Jesus Christ Superstar" that Tim is reworking treatments of Chess on both stage and screen.

Yeah, but Tim is always saying he is going to rework Chess for production. He's literally been talking about it for years now. While I don't doubt it's on his plate, show business is always a bumpy ride, and that goes double for a show like Chess where the legal rights are tricky in the United States. I will believe it when I see it.

I personally believe the show has gone as far as it should go. Why keep reworking the thing...

Because it can be so much better with reworking. and this show deserves a movie even more than Hairspray or The Producers or even Jekyll & Hyde (Yes I said it Salome)

Actually....at Samuel French's website where the rights to Chess are, it states that the rights are partly-limited. I know alot of shows say that, but why? Im not sure
