Rumor going on

I read somewhere that the DVD of the filmed production of RENT is to come out in February.
dolbinau

So did I. Announcement November 26th or something. Looking forward to the release.

YAY!!! I still think they should make a DVD out of the recorded OBC performance that supposedly exists, though.

All the orginal performances of all the shows exist. They're taped and stored away somewhere...anyone want to put in where they are?
Luc

^I'm not sure that it's every single Broadway performance ever. I think it's one for each cast, and they are in a library in New York. You can watch anything, but once you press play, it plays right to the end. No rewinding or pausing or stopping or anything. This is just what I've heard from around this site, though. I've never looked into it myself.

I don't also know what the quality is like..I assume just one camera; almost bootleggish?

I just don't understand what the point of archiving is if we don't get to watch it. (Well I suppose you can if you have special reasons). Will have to check it out one day.

People do get to watch it. Just not everybody. That would be a logistical nightmare.

I am really excited about this - I hope the rumoured announcement does happen this week. This will be decent timing for me to block the 2nd act of the School Edition I'm directing. I have my own ideas, of course, but it's nice to be able to watch the real deal and take inspiration from it.

As far as the archiving of performances, I think the quality is probably better than bootleg-ish. There is a press kit-type video on YouTube that has multiple camera angles and great audio from an original cast performance. I think they do a decent job, otherwise what's the point?
theatre4life

it's the Lincoln Center archives and from what i've heard/read, they use up to 3 different cameras with multiple angles and close-ups and professional sound.

they oughta release the damn shows - not just Rent - on dvd. i dont see the point, really either. i mean, they mostly just sit there on a shelf and rot. i know people can watch them, but i've heard they're VERY strict on who and you must give a VERY good reason as to why. Rolling Eyes

Yeah ... who gets to watch these archive shows anyway? What's the procedure? I may be trippin' to NY sometime in the next 6 months or so and I'm ever intrigued by the possibility of watching some OBCs...

People do go in and watch them.

If you want to find some robo-employees who enjoy tracking down every single person involved in an archived production (including their heirs, in some cases) and get them to sign a billion waivers, then deal with possible royalties, then you'll be able to get these out to the general public. In the meantime, just chalk it up to something that's not accessible and never will be.

I heard if you have a valid reason e.g uni assessment or directing a show or something like that.
Brock07

It's official. I'm excited beyond words.

Yes, and no one has posted a link so far. Lame.
