Rubies!Dear "Sweeney Todd" Fans,
If I were directing the musical "Sweeney Todd," I would add a specific bit of blocking (?) to the song "My Friends"; I think that when Sweeney Todd sings "You shall drip rubies" Mrs. Lovett should pantomime handling a fancy ruby necklace, as though she's lusting after the riches that her future relationship with Todd might bring to her.
Has anybody ever seen that sort of blocking (?) appear during any production of "Sweeney Todd"?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Elaborate, please...Dear Salome,
Please elaborate on that thought. I'm curious to know WHY the idea "seems rather stupid to [you]". Do you think that the idea is ridiculous because Todd and Lovett haven't actually gone into business together yet? I did think of that, but I still like the idea; that sort of blocking could be very symbolic, and it could also hold a double meaning.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

Obviously Todd is talking about blood but throughout that song Lovett thinks he is singing about her so I think on that line her eyes should light up or she could give Todd a look but modelling an imaginary necklace sounds a little overthetop. Plus it would distract the audience from the intimate feel of the song and put the attention on Lovett acting like a clown.

Yes, it seems too self-parodying IMO.

 | Wellit depends how it were done. I can see if it was an overthe top gesture than yes. but I kind of like the symbolic idea as long as it were not done over thetop.

mostly, i've just seen it where she's sitting on the stool behind Todd, whom is on the edge of the platform to the pie shop and she mostly has no real movement, and Todd mimes slowly slicing into someone's throat on that line.
i agree, the necklace thing would look dumb.

I agree with everyone else....
I personally like how it was done in the film.

Additional idea!Dear "Sweeney Todd" Fans,
I am suddenly thinking that it'd be cool if Mrs. Lovett could non-distractingly mime wearing a ring, or a necklace, when she says "Silver's good enough for me,".
Thanks in advance for your replies.

I don't think either would read from the stage.

seriously... this isnt a number you need lots of movement from Mrs Lovett at all. Todd is admiring his old "friends" (the razors) and that is all.
stop over-thinking it.

I thought it was brilliant. Especially the addition of the word pepperoni.
It was grotesque.
