Rosie's last nameI was in Bye Bye Birdie at my high school, and our script gave Rosie's full name as Rose Alvarez. However, I have seen a number of other sources (including the original Broadway cast album) where she is listed as Rose Grant. Why is her last name different in different sources? And doesn't "Spanish Rose" kind of lose its point if Rosie doesn't have a Spanish-sounding last name?

I think in the original movie, Rose's last name was changed to Grant because the actress was blonde and didn't look hispanic at all. I know the movie had Dick Van Dyke (I think) as Albert and Ann Margaret I think played Kim, but I don't remember who played Rose.
In the production I did, Rose's last name was Alvarez.
Disney also did a remake with Jason Alexander as Albert, Vanessa A. Williams as Rose, and China Phillips as Kim. In that one, I know Rose's last name was Alvarez.

Just looked up the movie version and Janet Leigh played Rose DeLeon. So there's another possible last name. Hmmm, interesting. . .

I know that, because I was in this show in high school. I'm just trying to figure out where "Rose Grant" came from and why it appears in the liner notes of the OBC album.

GrantOkay, sorry this is 5 months later.. but I was looking at the original playbill in my university's theatre library and i was puzzled to note that Chita Rivera was billed as "Rose Grant." Not sure when or why it become Alvarez, but apparently it was originally Grant.
