We could possibly be doing Joeseph in Feb (07) and wondered what roles there were for males (in order of importance).

thanks!
Baker

Joseph
Pharoah
Jacob
Brothers (11)
Potiphar
Butler
Baker

I don't know ranges or anything... but there are the roles for you.

I would rearrange the order of importance (that sounds really rude, but we know what we mean, lol) as follows:

* Narrator
Joseph
Pharaoh
Brothers
Butler
Jacob
Potiphar
Baker

You can find their vocal ranges as written in the licensed version in the sticky at the top of the forum

* Don't forget to consider the narrator. It's now played by a woman the vast majority of the time, but there are several reasons why a guy can and should do the role - even if it's just one guy out of two or three people performing the role together, as is often the case. It was originally written for a man, so it's in a very male tenor key (often, you end up with a "mezzo/belter" getting in over her head singing the role). It also helps the interactions between Joseph and the Narrator; man/man relationships are different from woman/man relationships, and having them both be guys creates more closenss and more direct empathy for Joseph. It also gives a clearer sense of a modern person looking back at another from another time if they're fundamentally similar that way.

I agree that the narrator can be played either way but in the original version it wasn't the typical female vocalist, it was a recruiting sergent. My mother played the role when she was in high school. They wanted her to play Joseph. I've seen the show done once by an all girl's school too. I think that either way the narrator is the best part.

____

No joke. Even when the Narrator is split between two or three people, it's still by far the best role in the show.

It's a shame that Peter Reeves isn't a very good singer. He certainly doesn't help encourage the idea of reopening the role to men.
