RightsDoes anyone have any idea about when MTI will be releasing this for amature rights? |
||
| MsDivaKate |
According to the MTI website, Rent is listed as being on restricted release right now.
| TCMan |
Rent RightsI meant when it will become unrestricted. |
||
| Tom |
I was told by MTI they are expecting the rights to become available in 2009
| Luc |
Almost there..... |
||
| MsDivaKate |
According to wikipedia, a high school has already performed the first LEGAL production of a "school edition" of Rent in 2006.
This may be part of the restricted basis that MTI mentions on the site. Again, right from wikipedia: Amateur productions On May 19, 2006, Shorewood High School, Shorewood, Wisconsin performed the first-ever non-professional production of Rent in North America, which was called Rent: School Edition. This edition omits certain scenes and dialogue, including the sexually explicit number "Contact". Rockdale Musical Society performed the Australian NSW premiere on September 16, 2005. |

School Edition? Sounds lame. However, i never liked "Contact".
| rock_musicals |
Hahaha, that's a funny name- "RENT: School Edition" Anyways, that's pretty interesting. |
||

Ahhh..... Wisconsin. | ||
| Tom |
I called MTI on November 21, 2006 and asked about the rights (again!). They said the rights will not be released for the original RENT until the show closes on Broadway, but that Rent:The School Edition will come out in about 3 months.
I guess the school edition will be like the movie - cut just enough to get the PG-13 rating. |
||
| theatre4life |
ya know, as sure as i am that it wont be that cool - Im sure Ill try and get a copy of that version. hehe.
|
||
| Luc |
RENT: School Edition - all of the adult content cut....
Musical Numbers 1. PRE-REPRISE: Seasons of Love. 2. Seasons of Love 3. REPRISE: Seasons of Love (Finale) |

^Haha! Totally agree. Making a school version of it is just stupid, IMO.
| MsDivaKate |
I agree. I mean how many schools will really be allowed by the school district to perform Rent.
I obviously have no trouble with any of the themes in Rent but you can sure as hell bet that parents are going to be flipping out over all the homosexual relations. When I went to see the film, a woman sitting next to me kept muttering "that's so sick" everytime Angel and Collins or Joanne and Maureen were together. I mean how much of that can you edit for a school and still have it be true to the original plot line? |

A local high school does lots of more... liberal shows (Company, Tommy). I'm sure they'd be able to do Rent.
| Tom |
I teach at a college prep high schoolschool that is liberal when it comes to our plays. We would be allowed to do RENT as is, but we have to wait on the rights.
We did Cabaret (revised version with no cuts - Bobby and Cliff kissing and all the gay themes intact), Prelude to a Kiss and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. All these plays had gay themes and we have never been questioned about what we do. We have recieved praise and support from Administrators, parents and students. We were the first school in Ohio to have a gay/straight alliance clubback in 1997. To kick off the program, Anthony Rapp flew in and spent two days with our students doing a performance workshop and a lecture to support the gay/straight alliance and to raise money for BC/EFA. I can't wait to do RENT. I will peruse the school edition and see if enough material remains to call it RENT. I hope to do it before 2008. |

Oh I'm sure that some schools will be allowed to do it, but it seems that there are a lot more conservative communities then there are liberal ones.
I always thought the area I live in was VERY liberal and my high school had a GSA as well, but I know for a fact that Rent will NEVER even be considered by them as long as the current music faculty and school board are there. I think there are definitely some schools that can pull it off but its going to be far and few. |
||
| taintedxl0ve |
^Same here. My school doesn't even have a GSA, so us doing Rent is definitely not going to happen.
| theatre4life |
i just hope it isnt edited EXACTLY like the film. theres a few songs left out of the film that should be still in there. this is my personal opinion list:
Goodbye Love We're Okay Happy New Year A & B Seasons Of Love B and, of course, those cute answering machine messages. Im sure theres a few more that i cant think of right now, but Im tired. working 'Black Friday' sucks... |
||
| taintedxl0ve |
^Isn't Seasons of Love B in the movie? |
||
| Luc |
Yup, right after "La Vie Boheme."
| taintedxl0ve |
Ok, good, I thought I was going insane there for a minute...
| theatre4life |
Oops. Ya got me. It's with the flashes of Mark's film.
|
||

Maybe they can clean up "Christmas Bells" and throw that in as well. That song truly shows Larson's genius.
| theatre4life |
i LOVE listening to that song. correct me if Im wrong, but wouldnt they just hafta eliminate the "got any D man", etc. drug references? |
||
| theatre4life |
okay, i dont wanna sound stupid, 'cos i've never looked into 'school' or 'jr.' edition shows, but are they STRICTLY for schools? would community theatres be able to get their hands on the rigths??
| Luc |
All they are is just a simpler version of the show for smaller budgets. Anyone can do them. |
||
| Gwen |
They actually almost did get the R rating even with what they cut- they mentioned that in the commentary. |
||
| Tom |
School editions are only for schools. You cannot have any actor older than 19 in the production, nor can any of your high school actors be "pros". As far as the Jr versions, they charge a flat fee for schools doing the production of around $500 as long as the cast is 9th grade or younger. Older casts must pay a full royalty which can be more expensive than the real show! |
||
| theatre4life |
well, of the 2 answers, i'd probly say that the 'no one older than 19' one sounds more like thats how it'd be.
| MsDivaKate |
I know of a lot of youth theatres that do Les Mis School edition as part of their summer theatre workshop/performances, so as it was pointed out, school editions aren't just for schools, your performers just have to be under a certain age.
| DramaRobin2002 |
I'm pretty sure that "We're Okay", "Christmas Bells", etc. are still in there. I think the cut like the movie comment was cut to get the PG-13 rating and not exactly cut like the movie taking out half the songs thing.
| theatre4life |
oh, okay. it just sucks that Im probly not young enough (even at just 24), 'cos i'd really love to play Collins - i mean, let's face it - are they really sure to find an African American EVERYTIME they do the show amature? |
||
| MsDivaKate |
^^Haha you know they won't.
It will turn into something similiar to when schools do Aida or Once On This Island(though that actually works ok with an all-white cast as the themes just change slightly). None of the ethnicities will hold true. |
||
| taintedxl0ve |
I thought I heard somewhere that the only song cut was "Contact." I could be wrong though...
| MsDivaKate |
Contact was definitely cut and I know there are some other modifications based on content and language...whether that being cutting out parts of songs/changing wording or removing some songs I'm not sure.
| Tom |

||
| theatre4life |
Boo - hiss. Who wants to wait for the regular amature rights! |
||
| Luc |
|
||
| MsDivaKate |
Does entirely by students include the pit/band too? Because when my sister's school did Les Mis School Edition there were some teachers/former students over 19 in the pit...
..I also don't remember them putting on everything that it was only by students, but then again it had school edition and *** high school all over it, so maybe it was assumed. |

Well, i'd like to direct it one day as well, but i'd also like to be IN the show and still young enough to do so. Yes, what a kick-ass alternative to A Christmas Carol!

A High School edition of Rent just makes no sense. I read a bit up on it, and apparently, it's more like an Afterschool Special. They don't remain at all faithful to the musical.
Which is, incidentally, kind of going against what Jonathon Larson wanted. Why not just do another show? |
||
| theatre4life |
well, why wouldnt his family just put a stop to it? i mean, in the docu "No Day But Today", they seemed to be quite involved. do they have any rights to the show anymore?? |
||
| taintedxl0ve |
I agree. |
||
| MsDivaKate |
Where did you read about the school edition? Is there a link to anywhere that you could share with us? |
