yes good. i liked it because in the west end versions they tend to get famous people playing this role and i think its tacky, whereas in the film he is supposed to be famous just like catherine and renee are.
is it the same on braodway? i hate it when they get rubbish celebs to do a proffessinals job :p

I must admit, I like Richard Gere in the role when I first saw the film, but after several watches through, I have reached the conclusion that he was a very bad choice for the role; not only is a very nasal singer, he also tends to have that STUPID grin plastered on his face too much for my liking
Also, in "They Both Reached for the Gun", his "Lemme here it" bits make me cringe so much. *shudder*

have to say thought he was the weakest in the whole film, I mean Renee, Catherine, John & Queen Latifah were all REAL great, so Richard was.... he's got the charms, but he doesnt look right for me, neither does he sound right!

I thought he did all right for himself. He's not really a musical theatre guy and they sort of had to turn him into one. You really can't expect him to be like Matthew Broderick and sing and dance with the greatest of ease. I was watching Chicago on Bravo the other day, and they had these random facts about the film... one of them was that Gere had three or so weeks of tap dancing training. He pulled it off, so he's a-okay in my book. I could never pull off tap dancing!

Mr Gere was an understudy during the original run of Grease, so he does have some musical theatre chops

I'm sorry I didn't know that - I must sound like such a fool.
(Well, basically I'm just saying he's not like Matthew Broderick...)

i think he was awesome! maybe the nasal in his voice fits the character. i saw chicago when it was playing in the city, and the billy had a good voice, but didn't fit the character as well as richard geere did. he didnt do any tap dance, and he defenitly didnt have the charm!

Oh dear.
He did no tap dance, because there is NO Billy tap dance in the stage show. Billy does not dance much.
The tap dance was some useless thing Marshall came up with for the movie.

his singing voice isn't more than pleasant, but overall thought he was a fabulous choice for Billy.

Okay so maybe he wasn't the best person to pick, but i think he carried the role pretty well

The casting directors originally approached John Travolta for the role, but he turned it down. I personally think that Gere did a great job. His singing was good enough for the character and his acting was superb, so who cares if he's a bit nasally?

i cant reely see john travolta in that role without him busting out singing...*go grease lighting.....*

For me, his acting was wonderful - his tap-dance was superb, but the singing was mostly annoying. I liked his "All I Care About" enough, but thats it.
My favourite - for now - is Greg Evigan!
