revive the cabaret forum after pruningwell hell, now that the specific musical forums have been pruned to crap, maybe we need to put a whole buncha stuff back on here. So let's start talking about cabaret. ANYTHING about cabaret. basic facts, opinions, likes, dislikes... let's just fill this back up again. The emptiness is depressing me.
MaryMag's likes about Cabaret:
* Kander & Ebb. period. love 'em
* the revival version is perhaps the most moving and effectively morbid musical ever made
* the role of Sally Bowles. fabulous
* the role of the Emcee, especialy in the revival version when he is much creepier.
* Mein Herr. Fantastic choreography. Love chair dancing. Also love to belt the D at the end
* anything set in the 20's period cuz I love those hair and clothing styles
MaryMag's dislikes about Cabaret:
* the complete elimination of Cliff's singing in the revival version
* the intentionally sloppy and drugged up style of dancing and choreography in the revival
* the stupid big names that have been cast in the roles. John Stamos? the pretty in pink gal whose name I can't remember right now? Brooke Shields I think was Sally once, too. I haven't seen them, but they're has-beens and I'd rather see a no name performing so I don't hafta feel sorry for the has beens.

I don't know... I guess that I just love Cabaret. My favorite song is 'Maybe This Time'.
I saw the show at a local theatre over the summer - it was good. My only qualm was that the girl playing Sally was very flat... the Emcee and the Kit Kat Club members totally outshone her! How sad is that! Part of being Sally is being out there and she wasn't. But she was okay.
Overall, it was a good show, but I missed the money song, they didn't use it in their production.

The actress from Pretty in Pink is Molly Ringwald.
Why do you have to think of them as has-beens? Although they may have enjoyed some amount of success in the past, they're still just actors trying to work steadily. Brooke Shields, in particular, is doing a large amount of stage work lately. And John Stamos has found a new niche in television with Jake in Progress.

I directed this over the summer. I live in a very Jewish town (more than 90%) and there was some trouble that one of the Kit Kat Girls may have had to quit because of the subject matter. Her parents doubted that I would have handled it well based soley on my age.
Opening night of the show, I am approached by her father, and I got a little scared. Half because he's about six foot eight and very large, half because I thought he'd say something negative about the production.
You know what he said to me? He said that he was sorry he had doubted my abilities and that this was one of the finest productions he has seen in a long while. He admired the way I handled the subject matter, and wasn't scared of it but still did it in the right way.
That comment made my dedication to the show over the entire summer all worth it.

I did Cabaret over the summer.* They took out a lot of the "negative" stuff like the smoking, etc. I really don't know why, but they added May Be This Time. I think we did the 1987 rev, because there was a lot of stuff still in from the old verson, like The Telephone Song and Cliff still sang, just a different part.
*Did as in run crew/intern at local summer stock

However, that's an actor/director choice rather than something strictly insisted upon by the text. So if, for instance, you were involved in a production of the revival version of the show, the option to sing the lines in "Perfectly Marvellous" would still be there.

I prefer the OBC to the revival. I know that most people disagree with this.

I don't know if you really can compare the the two because they are almost two different productions.

In what version did Cliff's song, "Don't Go" first appear?

I believe that'd be the original.

No, they had cliff sing "Why Should I wake up?" "Don't go" I think is from the 1987 reviel.

It was in the 1987 Broadway revival. it replaced Why Should I Wake Up?. The recent revival dropped both and used Maybe This Time instead.

Hooray! I just watched all of Cabaret for the first time! (I didn't really want to start a new thread for this, so I figured I'd post it here.) I really enjoyed it, I saw the one with Joel Grey and Liza Minelli. I'd only seen two songs, Tomorrow Belongs to Me and Money Makes the World Go Round when I was little, but tonight I watched the whole thing and loved it! My only regret is my video of it is really old and it was hard to catch all the lines. I can definitely see myself buying the DVD and recordings soon.

You should definitely get the '98 revival recording with Alan Cumming as the Emcee, as well as the original cast recording too.
The movie's soundtrack is pretty good as well (my mom has it on vinyl and that's basically the reason why I love Cabaret. She'd play the recording all the time when I was younger).

^I think I'll get those, thanks (when I actually have money ).
This is random, but oh well. In my musical productions class we did an audition project where each group of students held auditions for a show and the other groups auditioned for it. I got to audition for Cabaret, singing Life is a Cabaret (if that's the name, sorry) and reading the scene where she tells Cliff she got an abortion. It was SO AWESOME! The student board cast me as Sally and so did my teacher. Some of my friends told me afterward that I made them tear up. It was really exciting and now I'm completely depressed that we won't actually be putting on Cabaret.
