Revival

Who wants a Broadway revival of West Side Story? (I DO!) Okay, if you were to cast it, who would you cast in what roles?

I would defintely cast Matthew Morrison as Tony, possibly Riff. If Patty LuPone were 25-30 years younger, she would make an excellenet Maria or Anita. Perhaps (if she were 20 or so years younger) Idina Menzel as Maria. I don't know who'd play Maria, actually...

Ugh, goodness no.. no Idina Menzel as Maria... nooo....

I would love to see a revival of WSS, though. I'm not sure who I'd cast - I have to give that some thought.

I agree with that! Idina just could not physically sing the role of Maria as she is more of a ...belter to put it in nice terms...and Maria is a much more operatic role made for a more classically trained female vocalist.

I would love a revival of this. I saw the tour a few years back...2002 or 2003 I believe and I dd not enjoy it at all. So I need something to redeem that theatre experience for me, as this show is very dear to my heart.

I wasn't sure what Menzel's range was. She's too old anyways. Perhaps some unknown could play Maria.

When I was coming home from NY, I was actually thinking about this (don't know why) and I thought that maybe Hugh Panaro would make for a good Tony ... or Riff.

Yeah, that was a somewhat random thought. Laughing

You do realize he's 42? Yes, he seems to have made a shady deal involving a painting he can never look at, but that's pushing it.

Oh I know he's 42 yes... but I was just saying it was more or less a random thought. And besides, this isn't serious at all. Very Happy

I say cast unknowns who can sing.

Des.
Salome

Gavin Creel as Riff

Dick Latessa as Doc

Fred Weller as Tony (if he sings)
NoOneMournsTheWicked

Aaron Lazar as Tony.

Me as Maria.

yes! i havent seen the stage show of west side story, and i want to SO badly.

Ugh...Idina Menzel as Maria gives me the shutters.

Imagine "Tonight" and "Somewhere" screamed off-key. What an image.

For some reason I'm thinking Emmy Rossum. She is classically trained and even though I cringed in the movie, I thought Emmy did a good job. I just can see her singing "Tonight". Correct me if I'm wrong please!

I would say unknowns would be best.

If you had to have ONE big name in it though, Norbert Leo Butz would be a hilarious Action. Imagine him singing "Gee, Officer Krupke"...

Wow.

Emmy isn't classically trained. She sang in a children's chorus when she was what, 7-12? And she was in the background of the chorus. And the woman who taught her is known for stripping girls of vibrato and tone. And if Emmy were classically trained, she wouldn't scoop and fail at the high notes so much.

Anyway. And plus, we don't want Maria to be a deer-in-the-headlights, now do we? Wink

For Maria, I'd deffinately say Amy Nuttal, Kelli O'Hara, or Julie Hanson.

Emmy Rossum, Amy Nuttal, Kelli O'Hara, Julie Hanson???

Rolling Eyes

I'm sure that somewhere out there, there is a Latin-American actress with a lovely soprano. I really hope we're past the point where we're going to dye someone's hair black and slap on a bit of tanning lotion...
