Revival...what's wrong with it?I learned that there were many diffrences in the Revival that pissed people off...1.Cutting out 'Green Finch and Linnet Bird". 2.Lovett humping the coffin table in "Poor Thing". Those are the only 2 that come to mind...what else made you mad? I,for one, think that the YouTube clip of "A Little Priest" was GREAT done by Patti and Cerveris. The reaction to "if you got it..." always makes me laugh as opposed to the way Hearn does it,which gets old after awhile. |

Cerveris is a hack compared to Hearn. |

Re: Revival...what's wrong with it?
Thank you, Salome - you're fabulous as always. Also, Im gettng a bootleg sometime this month that has Len Cariou [the original] as Sweeney. Ill let ya know how he was. |

I don't think so. And Hearn is a hack compared to Cariou. The problem with Hearn is that he can't potray Sweeney as a dark menacing character. He just screams his way through the part, he is always shouting. That way his "Epiphany" doesn't really have that big of an effect, since he has already been just as loud and crazy for the whole show. With Cariou, "Epiphany" was so shocking and powerful, because he had played Swweney very subtly before that moment of madness. Hearn is mad from the start. This is not to say that Hearn is bad, not at all. I think he is a very good Sweeney, but far from the ultimate. It pisses me of that great performers like Dennis Quilley, Alun Armstrong and Bryn Terfelgot didn't get to record their versions and insted he have 2 DVD's of Hearn. |

Hearn handled both the agony and the melodrama perfectly. Cerveris was quite dull. trust me. Hearn has more range in his pinky than Cerveris in his whole being. Ive seen both.
Quilley I would like to have seen. He was always a wonderful actor who was taken from us too soon..but dont compare Cerveris to a masterful sondheim interpreter like Hearn. as for Bryn terfel..good voice but he is a singer not an actor. |

Personally, I agree with Salome!

Cervaris is by FAR my favorite Sweeney, in fact, I find the original a misinterpretation. It took one of my favorite peices of theatre and turned it into, something good, but not special. I listened to the revival first you see, and I find it far superior to the original.

Could not have said it better myself. Hearn is not a bad Sweeney but he cannot compare to Cariou. Cariou understood that it was Lovett who was the villian and knowing that let him play the character with a lot more sensitivity. I think most of that comes from working with the originators of the piece. The insight that both Lansbury and Cariou got from Hal Prince, Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler during the original run really mastered their performances. |

Baranski was an AMAZING Lovett. Mitchell was a bit boring. |
