Representation of Sondheim's life

So, today in my acting class my professor brought to our attention that Into the Woods is actually a representation of Sondheim's life in some ways. For example, Sondheim's mother had an affair with his father (representing the baker's wife and cinderella's prince in the "anything can happen in the woods" song) and he had the baker's wife squished by the giant to represent his anger towards her (his actual mother). Also, Sondheim's father leaving his family (represented by the mysterious man). I never considered this and just thought it was interesting because I'm a big ITW fan. Does anyone else know of any other symbols that are symbolic of Sondheim's life? Any relevence of specific characters? (I'm actually writing a paper on this so input would be fantastic Very Happy ) Thanks!

From what I learned off of wikipedia the Baker being uneasy with his child was another thing about his father.

And something about the Witch and his mother....I forget.

I thought Into the Woods was based off a book, so wouldn't all of those things be from the author, not Sondheim?

James Lapine wrote the book (another word for script) for the show. I don't think it was based off of any previous novel. Sondheim didn't write the book of the show so I don't think these things were representative of that. Of course, that's not to say he didn't have any influence over the story.

You're right....and now I just confused myself because we had like an hour long lecture/discussion on this in class....maybe he just had a big influence on the writing of the script? Someone clarify...haha = P
