RENT vs. La Boheme

Which version did you enjoy most?
The Very Angry Woman

I saw Baz Luhrmann's La Bohème about a dozen times and Rent 8 times. They both have their merits. Of course, one has several more years' worth of existence than the other, not to mention being in public domain. Your question is kinda jacked.
What you own

You kinda can't compare them.

I'm a "Boheme" girl, personally, even though the ending sometimes depresses me and I sometimes think opera!Mimi is a Mary Sue. But then, I'm an opera girl in general. As I'm writing this, I'm listening to "Madame Butterfly" with Victoria de los Angeles (who was also a very famous Mimi) and Giuseppe di Stefano (also one of the sexiest Rodolfos I've ever heard).

It's kind of interesting to think about the three major musicals based on operas (Rent, Aida and Miss Saigon). It seems to be just as common for musical theatre men to play Roger, Radames and Chris (e.g. Adam Pascal doing both of the first two roles, Will Chase doing all three) as it is for tenors to sing Rodolfo, opera!Radames and Pinkerton. But I've never heard of a woman who's played Mimi, Aida and Kim, all three, while it's perfectly common for sopranos to sing opera!Mimi, opera!Aida and Butterfly. I suppose it's because each of those three female characters is a different race: in musical theatre it would cause a scandal to have a non-Asian Kim or a non-black Aida, but in opera, voice still comes first, so no one bothers to be PC. (Sorry for rambling)

Say is there a recording of Victoria de los Angeles as Mimi by any chance?

It might've happened in Japan or Korea.

That said, I love them both. La Boheme was the first opera I ever listened to beginning to end, and it turned me onto things like Turandot and Madame Butterfly.

Yes: it's a 1956 EMI recording conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. Jussi Bjorling is Rodolfo and Robert Merrill is Marcello. It's often considered the greatest recording of the opera.

Here's an Amazon link to the various CD releases of it. The "Great Recordings of the Century" version probably has the best sound, but some of the other releases are cheaper.
